After several years of searching for a location and funding, Somerset West Community Health Centre will expand health care and social services to the Hintonburg area.
?The project is known colloquially as the Hintonburg Hub ? there?s been a lot of ups and downs in trying to find the right space, the right time and finding the funding to make it happen,? said Vicky Smallman, the centre?s board chair.
On Tuesday, Smallman announced the Champlain Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) and the provincial government would provide annual funding of $334,000 to make the Hub a reality.
Chantale Leclerc, CEO of Champlain LHIN, said the money would be used to purchase and renovate the space at 30 Rosemount Ave. and to continue to provide funding for new and existing health care providers.
?Some of the services will be similar, we?re going to have front line medical care here, probably a walk-in (clinic) as well and we?ll probably have some form of community kitchen,? said Smallman. ?Right now we deliver health care and social services all over the neighbourhood in different ways, this will allow us to bring some of those services into one central location, to meet the needs of a growing, vulnerable community.?
MPP Yasir Naqvi added that the expansion is crucial since the Hintonburg area is lacking a central health centre.
?If you look around this neighbourhood, there is no access to primary care. So what?s happening is you?ve got seniors, you?ve got residents who are either going to the Civic Hospital to get services or they are going farther down to Somerset West which is located in China town,? Naqvi said.
The expansion will provide 1,100 Ottawa residents living in Hintonburg easier access to primary care.
The Hintonburg Hub is slated to open in early 2014.
