FurnitureInFashion Plans to increase its UK warehouse Facility

FurnitureInFashion is planning to increase its UK based furniture warehouse facility by a further 50,000 sq. feet to meet its increasing demand of furniture

(PRWEB UK) 31 July 2012

FurnitureInFashion is planning to increase its UK based furniture warehouse facility by a further 50,000 sq. feet to meet its increasing demand of furniture. The company has decided to expand its warehouse after seeing the increasing sales and demands from the local and global clients and customers. FurnitureInFashion has been into retail business since 2008 and is now one of the leading furniture stores in the UK due to its durable and cheap furniture items. The increase in demand from the customers shows that they trust FurnitureInFashion?s brand. Asad Shamim shared his plan of expansion and said, ?We used to have five warehouses scattered over different sites. Now with the expansion of our warehouse in UK with an addition of 50,000 sq. ft. we will be able to provide every facility under one roof. This warehouse will now include all the business including showroom, 90% of the stock, warehouse and other offices.?

Asad Shamim moved the FurnitureInFashion store from Trinity Street, Bolton last year because of the rising business rates and the change in the area in terms of retail base. He said, ?The whole retail base in Bolton changed when Rivington Taylor closed, Focus stopped trading and the old college was demolished. This and an increase in our bulk customers prompted us to shift our warehouse in Farnworth, an industrial estate area in the UK.? FurnitureInFashion is not only earning through its online catalogue and showroom but it also has a great network off affiliates and drop-shippers. By expanding the FurnitureInFashion warehouse in UK, the company will be able to cater its drop-shippers as well and avoid any unprecedented shortages. Asad Shamim also said, ?We are helping entrepreneurs setting up their drop shipping businesses as well. We are working in collaboration with many drop shippers at the moment which also requires us to store maximum furniture items in order to help drop shippers make money. So I ask the drop-shippers to relax and get ready for more business opportunities with FurnitureInFashion.?

FurnitureInFashion is working with almost 200 affiliates and drop-shippers at the moment. With such a wide network, the responsibility of the company increases as it has to provide furniture items to clients of various drop-shippers in a timely manner. Any delay on part of FurnitureInFashion will affect the performance of affiliates and drop shippers which will eventually make a negative impact on the sales of FurnitureInFashion. Asad Shamim said, ?With such a large network of affiliates and drop shippers, the company has been able to enjoy increased sales by 40% in the first three months of this year. Many entrepreneurs find these modes of money making convenient as they don?t require any storage or inventory management. We on the other hand get extra hands in marketing our products and increasing sales eventually.?

With the expansion in UK based warehouse, FurnitureInFashion will be able to make more partnerships with drop-shippers which will increase the sales for the company and market its products. Asad also said that having separate showrooms at different locations was getting hectic as he wasn?t able to visit all the warehouses regularly. By bringing every business function under the same roof, FurnitureInFashion will be able to focus better and streamline the business functions appropriately.

By Monya Baker of Nature magazine

Last week, the Sacramento Bee reported that two neurosurgeons at the University of California, Davis, had been banned from research on humans after deliberately infecting three terminally ill cancer patients with pathogenic bacteria in an attempt to treat them. All three died, two showing complications from the infection. Nature explores what happened and the science behind it.

Who authorized the researchers to infect the patients?
All three patients consented to infection. However, anyone testing experimental drugs in the United States requires approval from their university?s Institutional Review Board (IRB) and oversight by the country's Food and Drug Administration (FDA), both of which review evidence for safety and efficacy. Neurosurgeons Paul Muizelaar and Rudolph Schrot at the University of California (UC), Davis, did not obtain this approval; they say they did not think it was required. Harris Lewin, the vice-chancellor of research at UC Davis, wrote a letter to the FDA describing what had occurred as ?serious and continuing noncompliance?.

In 2008, working under instructions from Muizelaar, Schrot asked the FDA about the possibility of deliberately infecting a postoperative wound in a particular patient with glioblastoma with the bacterium Enterobacter aerogenes. He was told that animal studies were needed first. Muizelaar did not infect that patient, but arranged for a graduate student to begin tests in rats. Although bacteria were purchased as research materials not to be used in humans, they were eventually used in three other patients with glioblastoma.

The first of those asked Muizelaar about infection in 2010, and Schrot contacted the director of UC Davis?s IRB asking permission to perform what Lewin?s letter describes as a ?one-time procedure? not intended as research. The director concluded that this procedure could be classed as ?innovative care? that did not require approval by the FDA or IRB, but that subsequent work should be reviewed. Schrot and Muizelaar went on to treat two further patients and were seeking approval from an ad hoc ethics committee (not the IRB or FDA) to treat five more when the IRB director told the neurosurgeons to cease and desist, and began an internal investigation.

How is brain cancer usually treated?
Glioblastoma is an aggressive brain cancer and is usually treated with surgery, as well as with radiation and chemotherapy. However, the cancer almost always recurs after surgery. Half of patients die within 15 months of diagnosis; fewer than one in twenty lives longer than five years.

Why might an infection fight cancer?
There are isolated reports of patients with various types of cancer successfully fighting off an infection only to find that the cancer has also disappeared. Presumably, the infection spurs white blood cells to attack both pathogens and malignant cells. In 1999, researchers at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson described four case studies in which the regression of malignant brain tumors co-occurred with infection. Enterobacter aerogenes, the same bacterium used at UC Davis, was recovered from microbial cultures taken from three of the patients.

What further studies have been done?
In 2004, a group led by Bert Vogelstein at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Maryland introduced cancer cells into mice and rabbits, allowed large tumors to form and then injected the animals with spores of the anaerobic bacterium Clostridium novyi-NT. About one-third of the animals' tumors disappeared, apparently as a result of an immune response.

Unnatural Selection: Muscles, Genes and Genetic Cheats

Can specific genes cause muscles to grow faster or stronger, and can genetic tampering give athletes an unnatural edge?

olympics, genes, musclePEAK PERFORMANCE: Olympic athletes competing in London this summer earned their place through countless hours of training and single-minded commitment to their sport. Take a close look at the athletes competing in this year's Summer Olympic Games in London?their musculature will tell you a lot about how they achieved their elite status. Endless hours of training and commitment to their sport played a big role in building the bodies that got them to the world's premier athletic competition. Take an even closer look?this one requires microscopy?and you'll see something else, something embedded in the genetic blueprints of these young men and women that's just as important to their success.

In nearly all cases, these athletes have realized the full potential laid out by those genes. And that potential may be much greater to begin with than it was for the rest of us mortals. For instance, the genes in the cells that make up sprinter Tyson Gay's legs were encoded with special instructions to build up lots of fast-fiber muscles, giving his legs explosive power out of the starting blocks. In comparison, the maximum contraction velocity of marathoner Shalane Flanagan's leg muscles, as dictated by her genes, is much slower than Gay's yet optimized for the endurance required to run for hours at a time with little tiring. Such genetic fine-tuning also helps competitors in basketball, volleyball and synchronized swimming, although the impact might be much less because effective teamwork and officiating also influence success in those sports.

When the gun goes off for the 100-meter sprint, when swimmers Michael Phelps and Ian Thorpe hit the water, when Tom Daley leaps from his diving platform, we will be seeing the finest that the world's gene pool has to offer, even though scientists are still trying to figure out which genes those are. Unfortunately, history dictates that we may also see the finest in gene manipulation, as some athletes push for peak performance with the help of illegal substances that are becoming increasingly difficult to detect.

The skinny on muscles
The human body produces two types of skeletal muscle fibers?slow-twitch (type 1) and fast-twitch (type 2). The fast-twitch fibers contract many times faster and with more force than the slow-twitch ones do, but they also fatigue more quickly. Each of these muscle types can be further broken down into subcategories, depending on contractile speed, force and fatigue resistance. Type 2B fast-twitch fibers, for example, have a faster contraction time than type 2A.

Muscles can be converted from one subcategory to another but cannot be converted from one type to another. This means that endurance training can give type 2B muscle some of the fatigue-resistant characteristics of type 2A muscle and that weight training can give type 2A muscle some of strength characteristics of type 2B muscle. Endurance training, however, will not convert type 2 muscle to type 1 nor will strength training convert slow-twitch muscle to fast. Endurance athletes have a greater proportion of slow-twitch fibers, whereas sprinters and jumpers have more of the fast-twitch variety.

Just as we can alter our muscle mix only to a certain degree, muscle growth is also carefully regulated in the body. One difference between muscle composition and size, however, is that the latter can more easily be manipulated. Insulinlike growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is both a gene and the protein it expresses that plays an important role during childhood growth and stimulates anabolic effects?such as muscle building?when those children become adults. IGF-1 controls muscle growth with help from the myostatin (MSTN) gene, which produces the myostatin protein.

More than a decade ago H. Lee Sweeney, a molecular physiologist at the University of Pennsylvania, led a team of researchers who used genetic manipulation to create the muscle-bound "Schwarzenegger mice". Mice injected with an extra copy of the IGF-1 gene added muscle and became as much as 30 percent stronger. Sweeney concluded that it is very likely that differences in a person's IGF-1 and MSTN protein levels determine his or her ability to put on muscle when exercising, although he admits this scenario has not been studied widely.

Slow-fiber muscle growth and endurance can likewise be controlled through gene manipulation. In August 2004 a team of researchers that included the Salk Institute for Biological Study's Ronald Evans reported that they altered a gene called PPAR-Delta to enhance its activity in mice, helping nurture fatigue-resistant slow-twitch muscles. These so-called "marathon mice" could run twice as far and for nearly twice as long as their unmodified counterparts.

This demonstrated ability to tinker with either fast- or slow-twitch muscle types begs the question: What would happen if one were to introduce genes for building both fast- and slow-twitch muscle in an athlete? "We've talked about doing it but have never done it," Sweeney says. "I assume you'd end up with a compromise that would be well suited to a sport like cycling, where you need a combination of endurance and power." Still, Sweeney adds, there has been little scientific reason (which translates into funding) to conduct such a study in mice, much less humans.

'Selena' star Lupe Ontiveros dies of cancer at 69

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Veteran actress Lupe Ontiveros, who appeared in scores of TV shows and movies including "Desperate Housewives," ''Selena" and "As Good As It Gets," has died. She was 69.

Ontiveros died Thursday at a hospital in Whittier, Calif., a suburb southeast of Los Angeles, after a brief battle with liver cancer, according to longtime friend and family spokesman Jerry Velasco.

She was perhaps best known for her role in "Selena," the 1997 biopic based on the life story of the Tejano pop star. Ontiveros played Yolanda Saldivar, who in real-life was convicted of killing Selena Quintanilla. The film launched the career of Jennifer Lopez, who played the title part.

Lopez said Friday she was "tremendously saddened by the news of Lupe's passing!"

"I've enjoyed her work throughout the years," Lopez said in a statement. "She was a great actress and working with her in 'Selena' was an unforgettable experience. She will truly be missed."

Ontiveros worked steadily in TV and film for more than 35 years.

"I want to go from the set to the grave," she quipped in 2010 while receiving a lifetime achievement award from the National Association of Latino Independent Producers. "From the stage to the grave, that's how I want go."

Her credits include "Real Women Have Curves," TV's "Desperate Housewives" and ? as in "The Goonies" ? many, many turns as a housekeeper. She once estimated she played a maid more than 300 times on the stage and screen.

"I've had a hell of a good time playing those maids," she told LA Weekly in 2002. "Each one to me is very special ... No matter how much I resent the stupidity that is written into them, the audacity that the industry has when they portray us in such a nonsensical, idiotic, such ? oh my God! ? such a degrading manner, still, my humor survives in these maids. I'm very proud of them."

Born Guadalupe Moreno in El Paso, Texas, on Sept. 17, 1942, Ontiveros caught the acting bug in 1972 when she answered a newspaper ad for movie extras. She went on to help establish the Latino Theater Company in Los Angeles and advocated for Latino performers throughout her career.

"She worked tirelessly to perfect her craft and open doors for countless Latinos along the way," said Alex Nogales, president of the National Hispanic Media Coalition. "Hollywood never gave her the lead role, but in our hearts she will be remembered as our leading lady. She will be deeply missed by all of us."

U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis cited the actress as an inspiration.

"Lupe Ontiveros' great talent extended far past television, stage and motion pictures," Solis said in a statement. "Indeed, she was a fine actress, but more than that, she was a woman of great action. And she was my friend for more than 20 years."

Ontiveros is survived by her husband, three sons and two granddaughters.

Daily Dose: Internet Art ? kollaborationtoronto

Art isn?t always in the form of something physical. When you think of computer based art you probably think of graphic design and drawings on Microsoft Paint. The computer is a powerful artistic medium that enables one to work on all levels of art that doesn?t require physical space. However, the most under looked and unheard of in the world of computer based art is internet art or web based art. Artists that work in this medium take advantage of what the internet has to offer and the ranges of complexity of their work vary on their capabilities. There is an infinite number of possibilities for what can be achieved. Here is a somewhat diverse set of examples.

Little Birdie Secrets: anger management tips for kids {5 ways to help ...

I know many of you have noticed we have been posting fewer projects and tutorials over the last year. A big part of that has been my family's two cross-country moves in the last 12 months, and the addition of our new baby boy in December. But there has been more to it than that. I struggle with how much of my personal life to share here, but sometimes I think we as women need to do more to reach out and help one another through the challenges of life, especially as moms. I have been working through some serious issues with my children, and I finally realized I needed to set my priorities straight. My children are more important than this blog or any craft project, and I have cut back my time crafting and sitting in front of the computer to be more hands-on with them. I don't want to put my children's personal lives on display, but I feel sharing some of the solutions we've found to help them in their conflicts could bless the lives of other families with similar trials.?

I know I can't be the only one out there who has struggled to help their kids through difficulties like anger management, depression, and adjustment issues, right? Or even just the Terrible Twos (or Sixes or Eights for that matter)! Many children in many different situations struggle with anger management and self-control. And learning to deal with that is a part of life. Our family counselor helped us create "tool boxes" to help the boys learn to control their tempers and deal appropriately with difficult situations. They may not all work for your child, but here are some ideas that might help your child learn to manage their anger, calm down, and avoid a fight.

1. Blow Bubbles

As adults we often try taking deep breaths to help us calm down in intense situations. But each time I would suggest that my son take a few deep breaths to calm down, he would get even angrier. Our counselor suggested blowing bubbles instead. Not only is a fun, happy activity for children, but the act of blowing air through the bubble wand requires them to breathe deeply. Soon they've relaxed and calmed down to a point where they can talk a little more rationally about whatever issue is at hand.?

2. Blow Feathers

Similar to blowing bubbles, a game of "don't let the feather touch the ground" works wonders for a child who is full of steam. Have your child hold a feather above their head and blow it into the air. Keep it in the air only by blowing--no hands! This again helps children engage in deep breathing to calm down, and the fun of the game helps them adjust their attitude.

3. Glitter Bottles

By the time my kids were 5 or 6, timeouts had ceased to be effective. Especially because they viewed it as a punishment rather than just a way to step away from the situation and calm down. Now, instead of a timeout, I hand my son a glitter jar. He knows to shake it up good, then watch the glitter swirl and spin in the water, slowly settling to the bottom. It really has an amazing effect and it's quite soothing. It can take up to 5 minutes for the glitter to settle, and in that time he nearly always becomes calm and more relaxed. (See my easy tutorial here for these Timeout Glitter Bottles!)
4. Target Practice
During one of their therapy sessions, the boys helped make this target on a piece of butcher paper. Each of them wrote something on the target that made them mad or lose their temper. She gave them each several pom poms (puff balls) to use as amunition. We hung the target on the wall in a quiet area of the house, and whenever they started errupting in anger over something, I would direct them to the target. The act of throwing something as hard as they can is a great way to release angry energy, and helps them to release their anger in a way that is not violent or harmful to others.

5. Model Positive Behavior and Walk Away
What do we do when our children cause us to lose our tempers? Our counselor helped me see that my children were often emulating my reaction to difficult situations (like yelling or rolling my eyes). She suggested I model the type of anger management techniques I wanted to see my children use when dealing with feelings of anger. And the best way to do that is often to walk away. Instead of showing my anger and frustration, now I tell my children, "I am feeling really upset right now, so I'm going to go to my room for a minute to calm down and we'll talk a little later." After I've had a good cry or screamed into a pillow, I am usually able to gain control of myself and deal with the situation in a better way. After doing this just a few times, my 6-year-old tried them same thing on me! As we began to argue, he told me he was going to his room to lay down and he'd talk to me later. I couldn't believe it. After all the times I had tried to send him to his room to calm down and being met with an even bigger tantrum, he had decided to do it on his own. Probably because I didn't mention it--he came up with the idea himself!?
This last year has been challenging for our family as we left the only home our kids really knew and moved across the country to a new home, new school, new church congregation, then added a new baby and another cross country move. I was excited for the change of pace, a bigger home and yard, and the chance to meet new people, so I figured my kids would feel the same way. But after a few months we noticed a profound change in our oldest son, including problems at school, angry outbursts, loss of interest in activities he loved, difficulty sleeping, and just general negativity. Our second son started having uncontrollable tantrums that became violent and seemed to go from 0 to 60 in seconds, over the smallest things. After talking to the school counselor, our pediatrician, and a dear friend, I finally made an appointment with a family therapist. It took me a while to do it because I hated the thought that I couldn't figure this out on my own--that I wasn't able to solve the problem just by giving my children more time, love, prayers, and patience. And there is such a stigma associated with therapy in our society, which I think is a shame. (Here's where I get on my soapbox.) I don't believe our Heavenly Father expects us to be able to deal with everything on our own as parents or individuals. I know prayer works, but sometimes you can't just pray away your problems--you've got to act for prayer to work! I've learned it's okay to reach out for help from someone who is trained and experienced in handling things that we may not be equipped to handle ourselves. That's why God made therapists! ;)

Both a friend and our pediatrician suggested a great therapist, so I swallowed my pride and made an appointment. Each week we met with a family counselor who first spoke with me, then met with each of the boys separately to help them address specific issues. She used some play therapy, talked to them about their feelings and behavior, and would often give them homework assignments to work on during the week. And for me it was such a relief to have someone to share my frustration, sadness, and helplessness with, who could not only listen, but actually help me improve the situation and become a better parent. Within just a couple of months, we saw such an improvement in the attitudes and behavior of our children, and I felt a new-found confidence in my parenting that has helped even after the sessions ended. I would strongly encourage anyone who is struggling with similar issues to seek out help from a professional like a family counselor, and don't feel badly about it for one minute! You don't have to do it on your own!

Weight Control Can Cut Women's Diabetes Risk, Study Shows

FRIDAY, July 27 (HealthDay News) -- Weight control through diet and exercise can prevent most cases of type 2 diabetes in American women over age 50, a new study finds.

Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Mass., analyzed data from more than 150,000 postmenopausal women who were followed for more than 10 years. Hispanics and Asians were about twice as likely as whites to develop diabetes; blacks were two to three times as likely.

Those differences were largely due to modifiable lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity and smoking, the researchers said.

The study also found that a large reduction in diabetes risk among women would occur in all four racial and ethnic groups if they maintained a healthy body weight, ate a healthy diet and were physically active.

Maintaining a body-mass index (BMI) of less than 25 appeared to be particularly important in reducing diabetes risk. BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight.

"Our work shows that among numerous races [and] ethnicities, the women with both high body-mass index and low levels of physical activity are far more likely to develop diabetes," primary investigator Dr. Yunsheng Ma said in a medical school news release. "A healthier diet and adequate levels of physical activity significantly lower that risk for most women."

The study was published July 23 in the journal Diabetes Care.

Type 2 diabetes, the more common type, means the body doesn't produce or properly use the hormone insulin, which is needed to convert food into energy. Untreated, type 2 diabetes can cause damage to the heart, eyes, kidneys and other organs.

Fears grow over fate of Syrian city of Aleppo

BEIRUT (AP) ? International concern was mounting Friday over a looming massacre as Syrian troops bombarded the besieged city of Aleppo with artillery, strafed it with aircraft and pulled in major reinforcements ready to crush the outgunned rebels.

The battle is one of the most important of the 17-month-old uprising. With a population of about 3 million, Aleppo is Syria's largest city and commercial hub, a key pillar of support for President Bashar Assad's regime.

The rebels controlled several neighborhoods but were facing reports of troops and tanks massing outside the city. The nonstop fighting in Aleppo has already claimed the lives of at least 145 rebels and civilians in the last six days, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay expressed "deep alarm," saying in a statement that the "reported build-up of forces in and around Aleppo, bodes ill for the people of that city ... it goes without saying, that the increasing use of heavy weapons, tanks, attack helicopters and ? reportedly ? even jet fighters in urban areas has already caused many civilian casualties."

In at least two formerly rebel-held Syrian towns over the summer, al-Qubeir and Houla, hundreds of civilians were killed after pro-regime militias moved in, according to activists.

It has been a difficult two weeks for the Syrian government with rebel assaults first on the capital, Damascus, and then on Aleppo, as well as several high-profile defections and a bomb that killed four top security officials.

The government, however, struck back and quashed the assault on the capital with a combination of heavy weapons and house-to-house searches. Scores of people were killed. Similar tactics were expected in the coming days to keep Aleppo from falling into rebel hands.

"I think there will be a huge massacre in Aleppo," said Michel Kilo, a veteran opposition figure living in exile in Paris. "There will be a terrible revenge against civil society." He said all of Aleppo, once believed to be a regime stronghold, was revolting against Assad's regime.

His concerns were echoed by British Foreign Secretary William Hague and U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, both of whom called on Assad to immediately halt the attack on Aleppo.

"I am deeply concerned by reports that the Syrian government is amassing its troops and tanks around Aleppo, and has already begun a vicious assault on the city and its civilians," Hague said, speaking at the opening of the Olympics in London. "This dire situation illustrates very strongly why the people of Syria needed the U.N. Security Council resolution we proposed last week."

Speaking at the same event, Ban added that "the violence from both sides must stop for the sake of the suffering civilians of Syria."

Western nations in the Security Council have been trying to pass a strong resolution condemning Syria and imposing harsher international sanctions. Russia and China have blocked them, citing concerns that they could pave the way for foreign military intervention ? as was the case in Libya.

The threat of Libyan forces retaking the rebel stronghold of Benghazi in March 2011 resulted in a U.N.-mandated no-fly zone that opened the way for a vigorous NATO bombing campaign. Russia maintains that NATO overstepped its bounds and does not want that to happen in Syria too.

As a result, there is little the international community can do to help the rebels surrounded in Aleppo ? or in other Syrian cities like Hama, Homs, Deir al-Zour and Daraa, where there are daily reports of bombardments and casualties. Activists estimate more than 150 people are killed every day nationwide. July is set to become the bloodiest month of an uprising that activists say has claimed 19,000 lives since it began on March 2011.

Gulf countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar are believed to be funding the rebels through Turkey and there have been indications that the ragtag Free Syrian army is using better weapons and tactics, as seen by their tenacious hold on neighborhoods in Aleppo and other cities.

The former head of the U.N. observer mission said Friday that he expected the Assad regime to fall eventually, but that the aftermath could witness even more bloodshed.

"It's impossible to imagine a future in Syria where the current people in power remain in power. So in that view, it's just a matter of time before this regime collapses," Maj. Gen. Robert Mood told a news conference in Oslo, Norway.

Mood, who left Damascus on July 19, warned that the regime still has a great deal of military muscle. The core of the army, which has vast reservoirs of weaponry, has remained loyal to Assad.

But the regime has been embarrassed by several high-ranking defections including three diplomats. On Friday, Ikhlas Bawadi became the first member of Syria's new parliament elected in May to defect.

"The violence being perpetrated by Bashar Assad's regime against innocent people who are seeking freedom is unacceptable," she told the Turkish Anadolu agency. "I could no longer tolerate the oppression, that's why I left. I will keep working to free all my friends from the oppression."

In Damascus, meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross said it was temporarily moving some of its foreign staff to neighboring Lebanon. A Red Cross spokesman in Geneva, Hicham Hassan, said the move was prompted by security concerns but that a core team of about 50 staff would remain.

Hassan also told The Associated Press that the Syrian Arab Red Crescent was suspending some of its operations in the capital because of "the deteriorating security situation."

"This in no way means we are suspending our activities, especially at a time when needs are growing. ... They will go back to Damascus at the appropriate time."

Poland, meanwhile, announced that it had closed its embassy and evacuated its diplomats from Damascus. The Polish embassy had been representing U.S. interests in the Syria since the U.S. closed its own in February.

Lawyers reveal mystery victim in Sandusky case

He was the victim whose horrific assault in the football team showers wound up costing Joe Paterno his job, severely tarnished Penn State's image, and brought accusations of a cover-up by high-level university officials.

Law enforcement officials dubbed him Victim 2.

Until Thursday, the boy was a phantom, absent from last month's trial of retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky and thought to be unknown to prosecutors. His identity was one of the biggest mysteries of the child sex abuse scandal.

Now, for the first time, a man has stepped forward to claim he was the boy in the shower, and his attorneys have promised to sue the university.

"Our client has to live the rest of his life not only dealing with the effects of Sandusky's childhood sexual abuse, but also with the knowledge that many powerful adults, including those at the highest levels of Penn State, put their own interests and the interests of a child predator above their legal obligations to protect him," the lawyers said in a news release.

Along with the statement, the lawyers released voicemails that Sandusky purportedly left for the man last fall ? less than two months before his arrest on child-molestation charges ? in which he expressed his love, said he wanted to share his feelings "up front," and asked whether Victim 2 would like to attend Penn State's next game.

The man's lawyers said Thursday they have done an extensive investigation and gathered "overwhelming evidence" on details of the abuse by Sandusky, who was convicted of using his position at Penn State and as head of a youth charity to molest 10 boys over a period of 15 years.

They did not name their client, and The Associated Press generally does not identify victims of sex crimes without their consent.

Jurors convicted Sandusky last month of offenses related to Victim 2 largely on the testimony of Mike McQueary, who was a team graduate assistant at the time and described seeing the 2001 assault.

McQueary testified at Sandusky's trial that he heard a "skin-on-skin smacking sound" in a campus locker room and saw something that was "more than my brain could handle" ? a naked Sandusky standing behind the boy and slowly moving his hips. McQueary, one of the prosecution's star witnesses, said he had no doubt he was witnessing anal sex.

McQueary reported the abuse to school officials, including Paterno, but none of them told police. An investigative report commissioned by the school's board of trustees found that Paterno and other administrators concealed the attack because they were afraid of bad publicity.

Trustees fired Paterno, who has since died, because he failed to do more about claims against Sandusky. The NCAA this week fined Penn State $60 million, imposed a four-year bowl ban, reduced the number of football scholarships Penn State is allowed to offer, and vacated 112 of the team's victories.

"Jerry Sandusky's abuse of Victim 2 and other children is a direct result of a conspiracy to conceal Sandusky's conduct and the decisions by top Penn State officials that facilitated and enabled his access to victims," the statement from Victim 2's lawyers said. "We intend to file a civil lawsuit against Penn State University and others and to hold them accountable for the egregious and reckless conduct that facilitated the horrific abuse our client suffered."

The statement also said that Victim 2 suffered "extensive sexual abuse over many years," both before and after the 2001 assault.

But it left many questions unanswered, chief among them whether Victim 2 talked to prosecutors either before or during the trial ? and, if not, why not.

The man's lawyers said they would have no further comment, and several messages seeking comment from Sandusky's lawyers were not returned.

Prosecutors had said on several occasions they did not know the identity of the boy, and they offered no reaction to the lawyers' announcement Thursday.

"We can't comment, given both our ongoing criminal prosecutions and our ongoing investigation," said Nils Frederiksen, spokesman for the attorney general's office.

The university said it was taking the case seriously but would not comment on pending litigation.

University President Rodney Erickson and the board of trustees, a school spokesman said, "have publicly emphasized that their goal is to find solutions that rest on the principle of justice for the victims."

Fluoxetine -- a.k.a., Prozac -- is effective as an anti-viral, study suggests

ScienceDaily (July 27, 2012) ? UCLA researchers have come across an unexpected potential use for fluoxetine -- commonly known as Prozac -- which shows promise as an antiviral agent. The discovery could provide another tool in treating human enteroviruses that sicken and kill people in the U.S. and around the world.

Human enteroviruses are members of a genus containing more than 100 distinct RNA viruses responsible for various life threatening infections, such as poliomyelitis and encephalitis. While immunization has all but eliminated the poliovirus, the archetype for the genus, no antiviral drugs currently exist for the treatment of enterovirus infections, which are often severe and potentially fatal. In view of its favorable pharmacokinetics and safety profile of fluoxetine -- which is in a class of compounds typically used in the treatment of depression, anxiety disorders and some personality disorders -- the research team found that it warrants additional study as a potential antiviral agent for enterovirus infections.

Using molecular screening, the UCLA research team from the Department of Pediatrics, the California NanoSystems Institute and the Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology found that fluoxetine was a potent inhibitor of coxsackievirus replication. This is one of the viruses that include polio and echovirus that is found in the gastrointestinal tract. Exposure to the virus causes other opportunistic infections and diseases.

"The discovery of unexpected antiviral activity of fluoxetine is scientifically very significant and draws our attention to previously overlooked potential targets of fluoxetine and other psychogenic drugs," said Robert Damoiseaux, scientific director of the Molecular Screening Shared Resource at the California NanoSystems Institute. "Part of our follow-up work will be the discovery of these unconventional targets for fluoxetine and other drugs of the same class and how these targets intersect with the known targets of this drug class."

Paul Krogstad, professor of pediatrics and molecular and medical pharmacology, added that understanding the mechanisms of action of fluoxetine and norfloxetine against coxsackieviruses "will add to our understanding of enterovirus replication and lead to assessment of their potential clinical utility for the future treatment of serious enterovirus infections."

The research team found that fluoxetine did not interfere with either viral entry or translation of the viral genome. Instead, fluoxetine and norfluoxetine markedly reduced the production of viral RNA and protein.

The study was published on July 2 in the journal of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy. Study authors also include Jun Zuo, Kevin K. Quinn, Steve Kye, and Paige Cooper from the Department of Pediatrics. The study was supported by grants from the Today's and Tomorrow's Children's Fund and the UCLA Department of Pediatrics Nanopediatrics Program.

A Partial Typology of Sexual Relationships in Consumer Culture ...

I?ve been reflecting on some of the ways in which people around me relate to others, specifically in regards to sexual/romantic relationships. I have noticed that these relationships often take various forms of contemporary consumer relations (i.e. how we relate to products in the market). Obviously, some of the connections are more readily drawn than others. Here are a few forms I have observed:

30 Day Free Trial:
This relationships is characterized by a risk-free, short-term trial period.? People are sexually interested in each other and pursue a relationship, but with the understanding that if things go wrong, if the product does not meet their needs and/or standards, you can always ultimately opt out and send it back. Satisfaction guaranteed!

Disposable/One Time Use:
Along with razors, cameras, and various containers, sexual relationships have also become disposable.? Disposable products are marketed in such a way as to convenience the buyer; you can use what you need but then you don?t have to deal with it afterwards, you can just throw it out.? Use people for what they can offer you and then dispose of them. Prostitution anyone? Or in some of it?s more glorified forms?

Rechargeable:
The batteries in phones, laptops, iPods, and many other electronic gadgets are rechargeable today. This increases the use-life of the product since the user can simply recharge it every time it runs low, every time its performance wanes. Here a connection can be drawn with the way in which superficial material goods dominate the ?recharging? of a relationship or even of a person?s sexual life.? Think of some of the advice that is given by presumably ignorant naive men to presumably shallow sentimental women: ?just buy her some flowers or chocolate? or vice versa ?he just needs a boys night around the poker table with some beer.? Here consumption recharges the relationship.

Bulk:
Simply put, more-for-less.? The ubiquitous bigger-is-better/more-is-better motif. (The danger here is to think that we are already beyond this way of thinking with products like the iPod nano. The miniturization of products with infinite applications is but another form within the same logic.) The locker room praise for sleeping with as many women as possible comes to mind?

Warranty:
Whether its 1 year, 5 years, 10 years, or a lifetime warranty, these product ?buffers? protect you from dissatisfaction; varying degrees of security at a variety of costs.? Certain kinds of marriage counseling and self-help regimes seem to fit this notion.

All of these types, I think, are driven by a logic of utility, satisfaction, and security that is radically at odds with the way Jesus relates to people and he suggests others ought to relate to each other. As for sexual relations, the life of Jesus is rather bare of information, but that the logic at work in consumer culture pervades throughout our sexual relations should already give us pause.

Obviously (or at least I hope this is self-evident), I am making an argument against these kinds of relationships.? One can see how the capitalist market is a destructive metaphor for sexual relationships.? What is additionally worrisome, is that the Christians have largely embraced this metaphor (perhaps without thinking or noticing).? I suspect that one marker of this shift towards the co-opting of sexual relations by consumer culture, within the church, has to do with the way the state defines and controls the terms and parameters of marriage, a Christian sacrament.? Of course, this is not all. The burden of insufficient thought about sexual relationships both Christians and non-Christians does not rest on ?civil society.?? The church has not done sufficient theological work on sexual relations either.? Both in Catholic and Protestant circles, discussions tend to revolve around an all-or-nothing understanding of sexuality (e.g. either you?re married and therefore a sexual creature, or you are not married and therefore not). This is both theologically dangerous and destructive as it ignores the sexuality of God?s creation (a form of neo-gnosticism?).? Our task then, is to think about what other metaphors for sexual relations Scripture might hold, and how we might nuance the duality of the married/single framework of thinking about sexual relations. (Songs of Solomon might be a good place to start. When was the last time you heard a sermon, devotion, Sunday School lesson on that?!)

This really is a partial typology with some half-baked thoughts added on. What kinds of questions, dear readers, do some of these initial thoughts provoke for you? Do you agree that sexual relations in the west reflect consumer culture? If yes, what other examples might you give? What do you think the task of the church is in response to the consumer culture of sexual relations dominating the west? What kinds of questions ought we to ask ourselves to initiate further conversation on this kind of discussion of sexual ethics? What might be at stake in such a discussion? What are some theological reasons that sexual relations might/should concern Christian ethics?

An Introduction to Using LinkedIn Effectively | Business Consulting ...

Having spent my late teens and early 20?s growing up within the immergence of social media, I thought I would share some of my experiences in terms of using LinkedIn as part of my process for searching out and seeking career opportunities. This will be just as relevant for people looking to promote their skills and talents when looking for their first job as it is with people wanting to move on to bigger and better opportunities on the career ladder.

The recruitment process is two way, as much as they?re evaluating how well you will be able to perform a job, you also need to be asking yourself whether their company culture, or indeed the job in question is right for you.

Linked In

Linked In is usually the place I recommend people start with. Although it is caught within the umbrella terminology of ?social networking?, it?s actually probably the least socially applicable network of people of all the other big social players.

A Linked In profile is not a particularly personable place, however its intentions are to allow people to cover and talk about individual?s essential business skills, experience and employment history, and is rather like a digital CV or Resume in that sense.

Get a professional profile photo

Simply because LinkedIn falls under the category of a social network, does not mean that this is a ?casual? network. If you?re using the same photograph that you commonly use across other profiles such as Facebook or Twitter, then you may be making the mistake of using a photograph that isn?t professional.

There?s a lot of benefit in having a corporate headshot, amongst looking the part, an experienced photographer will be able to help you communicate personality traits or characteristics that are otherwise also desirable in someone who is going to be required to fit in with a new team. A professional photograph will convey your likable qualities and allow others to connect your experience and abilities to a face.

Know your game plan and strategise accordingly

There are two core strategies you want to be adopting on LinkedIn.

Firstly communicate what drives and motivates you in terms of your professional skills and career aspirations. Complete your profile; make it clear, succinct and insightful. List your skills and expertise and prioritise the order in which you arrange and display them, as this will convey what you yourself find most interesting or challenging and what appeals most to you.

Don?t neglect or skimp on detail. Fill in your interests, if you cannot convey that you?re a likable or interesting person that will fit into a role, why would someone hire you? Technical competence or proficiency in skills and abilities alone are not enough.

Secondly use this as a tool for making yourself known with other potential employers. If you know the names of the key influential people, you can perform a search on LinkedIn that will hopefully return their profile. These people may head up human resources in public sector organisations, team managers, CEOs or business owners. You can then start to gauge what makes these people tick, and what they are in turn going to be looking for in a potential employee.

The recruitment process is two way, as much as they?re evaluating how well you will be able to perform a job, you also need to be asking yourself whether their company culture, or indeed the job in question is right for you.

Even if a company is not yet looking to employ somebody, you at least benefit from the visibility and exposure your may receive by simply being on their radar, seen to be being keen and interested in what they do. As well as connecting with people, you can also be following company pages. This will mean that your name potentially shows up within a weekly or monthly activity report that measures number of a new followers.

Connect your online tools and services together

If you?re using other social tools and services or even own a website then you can be linking out to these other places from this central professional hub. These interconnected services will allow prospective employers to gather a bigger picture of who you are beyond the bravado and elevator pitches they might otherwise encounter in such places as your covering letter.

If you?re on Twitter, you may wish to integrate this service with LinkedIn so that your tweets become your LinkedIn status. Like other status updates on other networks, this will appear at the top of your profile and can be used to add more current information, is there a particular project you?re working on, are you learning to do something new for example? Don?t fill this with irrelevant mundane information, it is possible to be selective as to what you also publish here.

You have three available slots for listing websites, and I recommend you use all three where possible. You may have an online portfolio of work, run or own a topical blog or have a website, which may either be used for professional purposes, or simply a hobby or interest. If you?re currently employed, it will benefit you by having your employers website listed so others can quickly gauge who you?re currently creating value for.

Seek out professional endorsements

LinkedIn allows you to request short testimonial style recommendations that can be displayed on your profile next to either a place of education attended or employment. Starting out you may wish to request recommendations or character references from course leaders or lecturers, if you?re currently in work then this may be your department head or boss.

Follow this advice and you will be well on course for getting the most out of your online LinkedIn presence and the inherent benefits it offers individuals looking to find opportunity and grow professionally.

HBT: A's, Jays, Red Sox interested in Hanley

This morning we heard that the Marlins are making Hanley Ramirez available. Bob Nightengale reports that he?s in demand:

He?d represent an upgrade for the A?s, no doubt. At least if you don?t think Brandon Inge is gonna carry that team offensively. In Boston and Toronto he?d make more sense as a shortstop. ?In all cases, he?s a gamble: will the change of scenery make him what he once was? Or will he be a $31.5 million+ bust?

The WF-7010 is one of just a few inexpensive single-function printers today that can handle paper larger than letter and legal size. Its direct competition at this writing is pretty much limited to the Canon Pixma iX6520 Inkjet Business Printer ($199.99 direct, 3.5 stars) and the HP Officejet 7000 Wide Format Printer ($229.99 direct, 4 stars), but neither of those printers offers anything close to the WF-7010's paper handling or speed.

Paper handling in particular is a strong point. The WF-7010 is the only one of these printers that offers two paper trays. That lets you keep letter-size paper in one tray, up to 13-by-19-inch paper in the other, and use the printer for all of your printing, easily switching back and forth between paper sizes without having to swap out paper in the tray.

Beyond that, the WF-7010 holds 250 sheets in each tray, for a total of 500 sheets, and includes a duplexer (for two-sided printing). This is easily enough paper handling capability for most micro and small offices, but as a bonus, Epson says the printer can also handle paper as large as 13 by 44 inches. According to Epson, you can load large paper using the 13-by-19-inch drawer, although most of the sheet will be hanging out from the front of the tray.

Setup and Speed
As with any large printer, the biggest issue for setup is finding a spot for the printer, which is 10.4 by 22.0 by 16.3 inches (HWD) with the trays closed, and 27 inches deep with the output tray fully open. Once in place, however, setup is standard. For my tests, I connected it to a network, and installed the drivers on a system running Windows Vista.

The printer's speed counts as another plus. I timed it on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) at an effective 4.0 pages per minute (ppm). That makes it significantly faster than both the Canon iX6520, at 2.9 ppm, and the HP Officejet 7000 at 3.1 ppm. It also did reasonably well on photo speed, averaging 1 minute 13 seconds for a 4 by 6, compared with 55 seconds for the Canon printer and 1:31 for the HP model.

Output Quality
Output quality for the WF-7010 is essentially par across the board. That makes the text more than good enough for almost any business use, although well short of what you'd want for serious desktop publishing. Graphics output was similarly good enough for any business use, including PowerPoint handouts, for example. Depending on your level of perfectionism, you may consider it good enough for output going to an important clients or customer when you want to convey a sense of professionalism.

For photos, Epson recommended using a matte presentation paper, which it lists on its Web site as a photo paper, and which Epson says is typical of the kind of paper most businesses use for printing photos on the WF-7010. Almost all of the photos qualified as true photo quality, and all were suitable for printing photos as part of a business presentation or the like.

In any case, the output quality overall is easily good enough for most purposes, while the combination of output quality, fast speed, paper capacity, a duplexer, and two trays add up to a compelling argument for the printer. The two trays in particular make the Epson WorkForce WF-7010 the only printer among its direct competitors that's suitable for use as your only printer, letting you switch easily between paper sizes as needed. All these strengths taken together put it way out in front of the field as the clear pick for Editors' Choice.
