Asia stocks rise as Japan gets new government

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets rose Wednesday as traders snapped up stocks before the end of the year, while the Tokyo benchmark neared a high for the year after a new, pro-business government prepared to assume leadership in a country plagued for years by economic lethargy.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index gained 0.4 percent to 10,122.82 as a further weakening yen gave momentum to the country's major exporters. The benchmark's highest intraday level of the year, 10,255.15, was reached on March 27.

Incoming Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has put pressure on the Bank of Japan to raise its inflation target from 1 to 2 percent to extricate the country from two decades of deflation ? continually dropping prices ? which has deadened economic activity.

Abe was to name a new Cabinet on Wednesday, following the resignation of Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's government. Abe has also urged the central bank to take steps to dampen the strength of the country's currency. A strong yen has hobbled big exporters like Toyota by eroding the value of repatriated earnings and making Japanese products more expensive overseas.

Abe has also called for aggressive public works spending to invigorate a languid economy.

South Korea's Kospi added 0.8 percent to 1,996.49. Stocks in mainland China, Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia and the Philippines also rose. The gains were reflective of investors with extra cash wanting to avoid missing out on an end-of-the-year rally.

"People want to get invested. In previous years, we've seen good rallies around the end of the year," Hong Kong-based analyst Andrew Sullivan said in a recent interview.

Markets in Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand were closed for holidays. Most markets in Europe reopen Thursday.

Among individual stocks, Japan's Fujitsu Ltd. rose 3.5 percent and Panasonic Corp. added 3 percent. Sharp Corp. jumped 4.8 percent.

Yonhap News Agency said South Korean mobile carriers fell after being fined for discriminative subsidies. SK Telecom Co., South Korea's top mobile carrier, fell 0.6 percent.

On Wall Street on Monday, the last day of trading before Christmas, stocks fell on concern that time is running out for lawmakers to reach a budget deal to avoid the U.S. going over the "fiscal cliff." U.S. stock markets reopen Wednesday.

For weeks, discussions between the White House and Congress over a budget deal have been the main driver in markets. If a deal isn't reached by the start of 2013, automatic spending cuts and tax increases worth hundreds of billions of dollars will be imposed ? which many economists think could push the U.S. economy back into recession.

Benchmark oil for February delivery rose 46 cents to $89.07 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract closed down 5 cents to $88.61 a barrel on the Nymex on Monday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3183 from $1.3192 late Monday in New York. The dollar rose to 85.15 yen from 84.23 yen.

Syria envoy seeks peace as clashes rage

BEIRUT (Reuters) - International envoy Lakhdar Brahimi pursued mediation efforts in Damascus on Tuesday, but there was no pause in the bloodletting as Syrian Christians marked a bleak Christmas Day with prayers for peace.

"We are here in a cave that symbolizes Syria right now," said a priest standing beside a nativity scene in a grotto.

"It is cold here but the door is open to all refugees," he told Syrian state TV. "Amid the hunger, cold and deprivation, we still have hope for peace and love for our country."

More than 44,000 Syrians have been killed since a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad erupted 21 months ago, igniting an increasingly sectarian conflict that broadly pits a Sunni Muslim majority against Assad's Alawite minority.

Christians, many of whom have been reluctant to join what they see as an Islamist-tinged insurgency, feel threatened.

Bishop John Kawak, speaking on state TV, said the Christmas holiday was "a symbol for the rebirth of the nation". He condemned "terrorism", the government's term for the rebellion.

Brahimi met some dissidents who are tolerated by Assad but rejected by the mainstream opposition and by rebels fighting to oust him, a day after he held talks with the Syrian president.

There was no word on any progress in the U.N.-Arab League' envoy's drive to end violence that has intensified in recent months as Assad uses airpower and artillery against rebel gains.

Raja Naser, secretary general of the National Coordination Body, said after meeting Brahimi that the envoy planned a week of meetings in Damascus and would stay until Sunday.

"There is still a lot of concern but there is also great hope that these meetings with other Syrian officials will result in some agreements or positive developments," he said.

But most opposition groups appear frustrated with Brahimi's quest for a deal on a transitional government. He has not clarified any role for Assad, whose foes say he must simply go, arguing that too much blood has been shed for any other outcome.

GULF PLEA

Gulf Arab leaders, who have long called for Assad's removal and some of whom have helped the rebels with guns and money, urged swift world action to halt the "massacres" and violations of international law in Syria.

The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported clashes and government shelling in hotspots across the country, including towns on the eastern outskirts of Damascus.

Abu Nidal, a spokesman for the Rebel Military Council in Damascus, said fighters had killed the head of a local security branch in the capital's suburb of Jaramana, home to a large Christian and Druze population.

In his Christmas message to the world on Tuesday, Pope Benedict encouraged Syrians not to lose hope for peace.

"May peace spring up for the people of Syria, deeply wounded and divided by a conflict which does not spare even the defenseless and reaps innocent victims," he said.

"I appeal for an end to the bloodshed, easier access for the relief of refugees and the displaced, and dialogue in the pursuit of a political solution to the conflict."

Hundreds of thousands of Syrians have fled abroad to escape the daily violence. Those who remain face severe shortages of food, fuel and other essentials as winter weather takes a grip.

Syrian activists offered a message of solidarity with Christians despite rising tensions in central Hama province, where rebels have demanded that Christian villages let them enter to force out the army and pro-Assad "shabbiha" militias.

"We say to the Christians, you are our brothers and our beloved, and your holiday is our holiday," said Abu Faisal, a Hama activist who posted a Christmas message on the Internet.

"The rebels are surrounding (the Christian town) Muhardeh to get rid of Assad's soldiers and shabbiha, but we have not forgotten your honorable stance when you took care of our refugees when the army entered Hama," he said.

"We will not accept that you are targeted by hatred, you are our brothers and our friends."

Retailers hope for last-minute Christmas surge

21 hrs.

CHICAGO/WHITE PLAINS, New York - Retailers limped into Christmas with last-minute blowout deals on everything from TVs to celebrity-branded clothing, after a disappointing few weeks of sales led many analysts to lower their expectations for the holiday season.?

Some industry watchers said shoppers were making smaller purchases, even though they are still visiting stores and browsing online. Since the holiday quarter can account for about 30 percent of annual sales and half of profit for many chains, such small distinctions can be crucial.?

"The attitude of the shopper went from Christmas euphoria on Thanksgiving weekend to more subdued, to less frenetic," said Thom Blischok, chief retail strategist and a senior executive adviser with consulting firm Booz & Company's retail practice.?

Before the season began, Blischok was looking for sales to rise more than 5 percent in November and December over the same period in 2011. Now, he said a gain of 2 percent to 2.5 percent appears more likely.?

Research firm ShopperTrak lowered its forecast last week for November and December sales. It is now calling for an increase of 2.5 percent, rather than 3.3 percent.?

"The season will be an OK season, it won't be as strong as last year but it won't be maybe as bad as feared heading into it," said Joseph Feldman, managing director and senior research analyst at Telsey Advisory Group. "Christmas comes every year."?

Some of those who are buying said they were holding back.?

Terene Collymore, a student of criminology at Monroe College in New Rochelle, New York, was at a Walmart on Monday, buying last-minute gifts, such as knitting supplies for her mother.?

Collymore said she was being more careful this year and not spending more on herself.?

"I don't throw money away," she said.?

Cheap TVs abound
Sales for the November-December holiday season are expected to rise 4.1 percent to $586.1 billion this year after a 5.6 percent increase in 2011, according to the National Retail Federation.?

But even with the diminished forecasts, retailers have done a good job controlling inventory levels this season, analysts said.?

The iPad mini has been tough to find in some places but is still available, while the new iPhone 5 is still in stock, suggesting that people may have stuck with their prior models or bought the less expensive iPhone 4S instead, said Feldman.?

The season has been "decent" but "not exceptional," said Noam Paransky, vice president in AlixPartners retail practice.?

He said he has not seen unplanned discounting or too much excess inventory despite slightly slower-than-expected growth.?

"Retailers have been disciplined. They haven't hit the panic button yet," Paransky said.?

Still, Target Corp slashed the price of its collaborative holiday collection with Neiman Marcus by 50 percent a few days ago. The collection was still marked at full price at Neiman Marcus.?

Meanwhile Sears was offering 60 percent off clothing from the reality TV family's "Kardashian Kollection," and Target, Walmart and Best Buy all had last-minute discounts hundreds of dollars deep on big-screen TVs.?

After-Christmas sales
Superstorm Sandy hit sales in the densely populated Northeast in late October and early November but retailers were able to bounce back weeks later with a strong turnout on Thanksgiving weekend.?

Now, fresh concerns about whether Washington will reach an agreement to avert the "fiscal cliff" of tax hikes and spending cuts before January 1 is leading some shoppers to curb spending.?

Overall, analysts said inventory levels appeared about right, though consumers' minds have changed since retailers placed orders for items such as apparel back in the spring.?

"I don't think it's an issue of ordering too much, I think it's the fact that the consumer has recognized 'I can learn to live with less, I don't have to have that fourteenth sweater, I just don't have to have it,'" said Blischok.?

Those retailers who are seeing weakness before the holiday could use after-Christmas sales to sell discounted goods, analysts said. Typically, retailers like to clear out their holiday merchandise quickly, so that shoppers coming in with the gift cards they received are more likely to buy full-price spring merchandise at fatter profit margins.?

Ex-President Bush spends Christmas in hospital

HOUSTON (AP) ? Former President George H.W. Bush spent Christmas in a Houston hospital with his wife, Barbara, and other relatives who planned to treat him to a special holiday meal.

Bush's son, Neil, and his wife also visited on Tuesday, and one of Bush's grandsons was planning to stop by as well, said Jim McGrath, Bush's spokesman in Houston.

The 88-year-old has been in the hospital since Nov. 23 with a lingering, bronchitis-like cough. A hospital spokesman had said Bush was likely to be released to spend Christmas at home, but then McGrath said the former president developed a fever.

Doctors remain "cautiously optimistic" Bush will recover, but want to keep him in the hospital while they help him build up his strength and balance his medications, McGrath said.

On Christmas, the Bush family normally eats at Gigi's Asian Bistro in Houston's Galleria neighborhood, McGrath said. There were plans to pick up food at the upscale restaurant and bring the meal to the hospital.

Bush has been receiving visitors for weeks, including two by his son, former President George W. Bush, and one by Jeb Bush, former governor of Florida.

Bush and his wife reside in Houston during the winter, and spend their summers at a home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

The former president was a naval aviator in World War II ? at one point the youngest in the Navy ? and was shot down over the Pacific. He achieved notoriety in retirement for skydiving on at least three of his birthdays since leaving the White House in 1992.

'Star of Wonder' leaves lots to wonder about

Clay Frost / NBC News

The leading explanation for the blblical "Star of Wonder" is that the Three Wise Men saw a series of planetary conjunctions. Click on the image to launch a Flash interactive about the astronomical side of the Nativity story.

By Alan Boyle

The Star of Bethlehem is one of the best-known parts of the Christmas story, celebrated in the Gospel of Matthew as well in as a constellation of holiday songs. It was that star that led the Three Wise Men to the infant Jesus ??at least if you believe the Bible. But is there anything in the astronomical record that supports the story of the "Star of Wonder"?

The answer is, maybe. The case of the Christmas Star illustrates how slippery things can get when you try to mix scripture and science.

First of all, there's no way to show a definitive connection between any astronomical phenomenon and the tale of the Nativity. On one hand, you could just say that the star was a miraculous apparition. In that case, no further evidence would be needed. On the other hand, you could say that the whole Nativity story, including the part about the Three Wise Men, is fictional. In that case, trying to find the Christmas Star would be as fruitless as trying to determine the real-life location of Dumbledore's tomb in the "Harry Potter" saga.

But if you go along with the astronomers who have looked into the likeliest scenarios to explain Matthew's references to the Christmas Star, the line of reasoning takes some surprising twists: The star could have been a series of planetary conjunctions, or a comet, or perhaps a nova. These events didn't occur during the year A.D. 1, which most people assume was the year Jesus was born. Instead, they occurred at least a couple of years earlier. They also didn't occur anywhere close to Dec. 25.

And here's what might be the most surprising twist: All this meshes with the views generally held by scriptural scholars.

Matthew's story tells of three "wise men" or "kings" ??who were actually astrologers. What they saw in their astronomical calculations led them to alert Judea's king, Herod the Great, to the birth of the "king of the Jews." Herod told the astrologers to look for the infant in Bethlehem and let him know what they found. Matthew says they came upon the infant Jesus, but were warned in a dream not to go back to Herod.

Historical accounts?suggest that Herod died around the 4 B.C. ? although some scholars suggest the date could have been as early as 5 B.C. or as late as 1 B.C. Using this time frame, astronomers have checked the historical records and run computer simulations of the night sky?? and they've come up with these leading candidates for the Christmas Star:

Planets:?The simulations show that there was a rare series of planetary groupings, or conjunctions, in 3 B.C. and 2 B.C. The first conjunction was on the morning of June 12 in 3 B.C., with Venus close to Saturn in the eastern sky. The second conjunction was a spectacular pairing of Venus and Jupiter on Aug. 12 in the constellation Leo, which ancient astrologers associated with the destiny of the Jews.

Between September of 3 B.C. and June of 2 B.C., Jupiter would have passed by the star Regulus in Leo, reversed itself and passed it again, then turned back and passed the star a third time. This reversal was due to the planet's apparent retrograde motion?? a phenomenon familiar to the astrologers but not necessarily noticed by the casual observer. In his book on the Christmas Star, astronomer John Mosley says this would have been a significant event, because ancient astrologers considered Jupiter the kingly planet and regarded Regulus as the "king star."

The crowning touch came on June 17 of 2 B.C., when Jupiter was so close to Venus that "they would have looked like a single star," Mosley said. His scenario implies that the climax of the Nativity story came in the spring of 2 B.C.

There's a problem with this scenario, however: It doesn't work if Herod died in 4 B.C. An astronomer at the University of Sheffield, David Hughes, has proposed a different series of planetary conjunctions in 7 B.C. This was a triple conjunction, in which Jupiter and Saturn would appear to approach each other three times between May and December. "Events indicate that Jesus Christ was probably born in the autumn of that year, around October, 7 B.C.," Hughes wrote in a?paper published by the journal Nature.?

Comet: Other astronomers have considered the idea that the "star" was actually a comet. The likeliest candidate would be a comet recorded by Chinese astronomers in the year 5 B.C., in the constellation Capricorn or Aquila. Comet Halley would have been visible in 11 B.C., and the record suggests that other comets might have been seen in the time frame between those two dates.?"The snag is that they're not that rare,"?Hughes told the BBC. "They were also commonly associated with the 'four Ds' ? doom, death, disease and disaster. So if it did contain a message, it would have been a bad omen."?

Nova or supernova:?The Chinese were particularly good at chronicling supernovae, and the fact that none was recorded during the time frame in question has led most astronomers to discount a supernova as the explanation for the Christmas Star. However, astronomer Mark Kidger argues in his book, "The Star of Bethlehem," that the comet seen by the Chinese in 5 B.C. was actually a nova?? that is, a suddenly brightening star. The temporary brightening may not have caused a worldwide marvel, but if it came after a series of planetary conjunctions, it could have been enough of a signal to send the wise men on their way.

Kidger's scenario calls for the climax of the Christmas Star story to come in March of 5 B.C., after months of buildup. He even names his candidate for the Christmas Star: DO Aquilae, which is just faintly visible today.

What scholars say:?None of these scenarios would be consistent with Western Christianity's traditional schedule for the Christmas season, which calls for the "12 Days of Christmas" to begin on Dec. 25 and wind up with the arrival of the Three Kings on Epiphany, Jan. 6. However, scriptural scholars have pointed out that none of the Gospels refers to the date of Jesus' birth. In fact, the Gospel of Luke?s account about shepherds being out in their fields might make more sense if the birth occurred during the spring lambing season.

So how did Dec. 25, A.D. 1, get set as Jesus' birthdate? The current counting system for years (A.D. and B.C.) was set up in the sixth century by a monk named Dionysius Exiguus, who combined his reading of scripture, Roman history and end-of-the-world numerology to pick Year 1. Scriptural scholars now agree, however, that the timing of the Nativity story would make more sense if the birth occurred earlier than that?? because of the timing of Herod's death as well as a better understanding of the chronology for Roman emperors and governors.

As for the December date: Scholars say that the early Christian church wasn't all that interested in marking the day of Jesus' birth. For example, a 3rd-century theologian named Origen mocked the Romans for making such a big deal over divine birthdays.

Around the year 200, Clement of Alexandria noted that the favored dates for the birth were in the March-April-May time frame ? which would be consistent with the astronomical scenarios for the Christmas star.

It wasn't until the mid-4th century that Dec. 25 started showing up in church literature. The conventional wisdom is that Christmas was set in December after Constantine the Great's conversion to Christianity in 312, to bring the Christian holiday into line with?pagan celebrations of the solstice. But Andrew McGowan, warden and president of Trinity College at the University of Melbourne in Australia, argues in favor of an alternate explanation: that church leaders wanted to link their date for Jesus' conception with the presumed date of his death, on March 25. If you add nine months to March 25, you get Dec. 25 as the date of birth.

"Connecting Jesus' conception and death in this way will certainly seem odd to modern readers, but it reflects ancient and medieval understandings of the whole of salvation being bound up together," McGowan writes in this month's essay for Bible History Today.

The tale of Christmas and the Star of Wonder shows how astronomy and numerology can get tangled up with religion. But we're familiar with that, right? After all, we've just been through the apocalyptic angst surrounding the turnover of the Maya Long Count calendar. Fortunately, this week's turn of the calendar has a much more positive spin. So here's wishing you a wonderful holiday season of your choice ? whether it celebrates?Christmas or the solstice, the new year on the Gregorian calendar, or the new baktun for the Maya.

EKNL, DROP - Penny Stocks Investing

First and foremost, we want to wish our members a safe and Happy Holiday!

Market will be open half day tomorrow and re-open on Wednesday and we will definitely be right there with our CORE plays EKO International (EKNL) and Fuse Science (DROP). No doubt looking for a Santa Claus rally for the history books.

We have seen opportunities in the past where key buying during ?Santa Claus rally? week set up for solid gains to follow and this holiday week will be no different. With the new year just around the corner, this week is definitely presenting some bargains for EKNL and DROP. We are not going to miss a beat on these plays this week!

What Does Santa Claus Rally Mean?
A surge in the price of stocks that often occurs in the week between Christmas and New Year?s Day. There are numerous explanations for the Santa Claus Rally phenomenon, including tax considerations, happiness around Wall Street, people investing their Christmas bonuses and the fact that the pessimists are usually on vacation this week.

Many consider the Santa Claus rally to be a result of people buying stocks in anticipation of the rise in stock prices during the month of January, otherwise known as the January effect.EKO International Corp.

Investors are getting ever so close to a monster rally with shares held by long and strong hands, and with a very thin share inventory. When trigger breakout event occurred, we can see EKNL soar super quick to record levels and in a ?blink of an eye? ? the prime time to load up on super undervalued shares is right here and right now ? we are that close.

We have seen the exact same lead up and a ?blink of an eye? trigger breakout with Fuse Science (DROP +83,000% gains) just prior to the history making breakout that not only was the talk of the investment community, it made some of our members millionaires who took the opportunities to load at similar levels

We have put a near term target of $2 for EKNL and we are determined to reach this level ? the potential of EKNL is XTREME, that is why we are committed to continue to profile EKNL all month and continue well into January!

Of course what really stands EKNL apart from everyone else is the relationships and key connections it has build so far.

imdTeaming up with iMDhealth.ca network just gave EKNL access to thousands of physician, diabetes education centers and health care providers for diabetics across Canada ? practically becoming EKNL?s sales force for the treatment of Nueropathy and the FREMS FDA approved technology.

EKNL released monster news announcing EKO?s Dr. Ziemer of NeuroVasc Medical Inc. and NCI, distributor of Neurometrix (NASDAQ:NURO)?s NC-Stat DPN check device are now available in 100 of WalMart-Canada stores.? Dr. Paul Ziemer, world renowned for his expertise in the medical field joined the team at EKNL.

These clinics will start to treat patients with their FDA approved FREMS technology that was also presented at the 13th annual Medical last month!

Also, Dr. Ziemer teamed up with Dr. Snow of Neurometrix, a NASDAQ Listed company (NURO) for exclusive hands on demonstration of their testing unit at the show.

No doubt, these are MONSTER updates that are turning a lot of heads, and institutional investors now eying that multi-dollar target level.

These updates already give EKNL HUGE valuation and potential?

?BUT, IT IS WHAT?S STILL TO BE UNLEASHED BY EKNL THAT WILL NOT ONLY BE MIND ?BLOWING? IT WILL PROPEL EKNL PRICES ?SKY HIGH? AND INTO RECORD TERRITORY

Yes, we can fix Social Security (but it won't be pretty)

By Allison Linn, TODAY

The fiscal cliff negotiations are reviving the debate about that other financial elephant in the room: Social Security.

Under current government estimates, Social Security could face funding shortfalls in about two decades if nothing changes. That?s because the U.S. population is aging -- and generally living longer.

That sounds like a disheartening scenario for workers who are currently paying into Social Security and worry that they won?t get as much out of it once they retire. ?About half of the Americans polled by Pew Research Center earlier this year believe it?s not likely there will be enough money in Social Security and Medicare to maintain current benefit levels into the future.

But experts say there are ways to fix Social Security. Politicians just may not like trying to sell those changes to the American people.

It has happened before, though. In the mid-1980s, none other than President Ronald Reagan, working with Democrats in Congress, oversaw a major overhaul of the nation?s retirement safety net.

That?s something many say seems less likely these days.

?There are politicians ? and especially in the Senate but also in the House as well ? who could work together and come to an agreement,? said Alan Auerbach, a professor of law and economics at the University of California, Berkeley. ?But they?re not the majority of Congress.?

Experts say there are two ways to fix Social Security, and neither of them are pretty: reduce benefits or increase revenue.

Reduce benefits
One of the few parts of the fiscal cliff negotiations that President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner seem willing to compromise on involves a change in the way Social Security increases are calculated going forward.?

The proposed switch to calculating cost of living increases using the chained Consumer Price Index instead of the current method would result in smaller annual Social Security raises. That?s because that method assumes that people change their spending habits when prices go up.

Proponents say the switch could save billions and is a more realistic method of how Americans really adjust to rising prices.

But opponents say the chained Consumer Price Index isn?t a good way to measure the needs of older and disabled Americans, because their expenditures are disproportionately focused on things like health care. A family of four may choose to eat more chicken if beef prices go up, but an elderly person can?t easily choose to spend less on heart medicine, they argue.

??It?s the biggest hit on the people that couldn?t take it,? said Dean Baker, an economist with the liberal-leaning Center for Economic and Policy Research who is opposed to the measure.

One of the longer-term options for reducing benefits is to simply tell people they have to wait longer to get their full benefits. By extending the age at which you can get full benefits, proponents argue that Social Security would be keeping up with trends toward longer life expectancies.

But opponents, including CEPR?s Dean Baker, say that a closer look at the data shows that the bulk of improvements in life expectancies have come from wealthier Americans. They say a broad-based increase in the age at which people can get benefits would punish less wealthy Americans, who haven?t seen such big life expectancy gains.

Andrew Biggs, resident scholar with the conservative-leaning American Enterprise Institute, argues that another option would be to dial down benefits for middle- and high-income people while maintaining the current system for the poorest Americans.

Biggs argues that if wealthy people are told to expect less Social Security, they have more leeway to prepare for it than poor people.

?If you cut my Social Security benefits I?m going to react by saving money and working longer,? he said. ?That?s good for the economy.?

Another option would be to reduce the Social Security benefits available to spouses. Some critics argue that?s growing outdated now that more women work and earn their own Social Security payments.

?It?s kind of a relic from a different era,? Baker said.

Increase revenue
Under the current rules, the maximum taxable earnings for Social Security in 2012 is about $110,000. Some argue that an easy fix would be to simply raise the cap on Social Security taxes to include higher wages.?

Baker, of CEPR, proposes raising the cap to around $190,000, reflecting the growing wealth at the top of the income scale. Raise it higher than that, he said, and wealthy earners will just start finding ways to dodge it.

But others say that it?s unlikely politicians will propose raising taxes on high earners?now, when many expect those taxpayers to already see increases as part of the fiscal cliff negotiations.

?The timing of it just seems kind of awkward,? Auerbach said.

Another option would be to add an across-the-board increase in payroll taxes that go toward Social Security. Although that would help solve the system?s future funding woes, experts say it?s also likely to be a hard sell in these tough times.

For one thing, Americans may?already be facing higher payroll taxes?in 2012. For the past two years, Americans have enjoyed a payroll tax holiday that reduced the amount of money they paid toward Social Security, but that could end in the coming year.

?I suspect that?s going to be a not very attractive option right now,? Auerbach said.

Politicians may be nervous about proposing any reform to Social Security that costs more or results in fewer benefits, but Americans seem to accept that some changes are needed.

About 66 percent of those polled by Pew Research Center said they would support raising payroll taxes on high-income earners, while 55 percent said they would support reducing benefits for high-income seniors.

Just 38 percent said they?d support raising the eligibility age.

How confident are you that you'll get Social Security benefits when you retire?

For Poor, Leap to College Often Ends in a Hard Fall

The New York Times:

Angelica Gonzales marched through high school in Goth armor -- black boots, chains and cargo pants -- but undermined her pose of alienation with a place on the honor roll. She nicknamed herself after a metal band and vowed to become the first in her family to earn a college degree.

Completely helpless against FB ID-theft from stalker ex-GF - Straight ...

I never imagined that this would actually be possible, but holy fuck she's got me.

I broke up with my ex ("X" from now on) a few times over the last month but agreed to get back together for various reasons. I could write 10 pages on how truly fucked up she is, but I'll just briefly mention, she's got very deep and serious issues (and one's that up until recently I've been very sympathetic to). She's an only child raised by an insanely controlling, paranoid-delusional mom, in a locked-in gated house, and she's been abused as a child.

She was so horrible to me one night a few weeks ago that I tried to end it once and for all as we sat in her car in front of my apartment. Just as I was about to open the door, she it the gas. (And again at the red light when I tried to jump out). Finally the next light I escaped, she got out after me leaving the keys in the car, she broke down crying on the sidewalk at my feet, I couldn't get her to budge so I said finally that we would go somewhere together and talk, car got stolen with all her stuff... not wanting to abandon her after this I got back together with her, figuring I'd at least stay with her until she was in a stable place again regarding her lost car, IDs, laptop, iPhone, etc.

AND, I gave her my Samsung tablet so she'd at least have access to the internet in the days immediately following. It wasn't long before major fights continued and there was a period where I refused to take her calls or communicate with her.

One night about a week and a half ago I was online late at night and I got a strange message in gmail that my account recovery info was changed. Well the message wasn't strange (and I quickly responded to it and changed the gmail password) but what was strange was that the message immediately disappeared from my inbox without a trace (bot in "trash" either).

At some point I noticed my skype password was changed and I regained access to that. And FB was changed once or twice where I was able to get back in. BUT a couple of days ago, on the 21st, she called me while I was drinking in a bar with friends, and I foolishly answered it. She threatened me numerous times with how she's gonna ruin my life and I told her in no uncertain terms "I'm not interested in your threats. Do whatever you need to do".

While I was still in the bar she managed to get into my facebook account, remove all the email addresses associated with it, create a new fake email address to associate with it, and remove phone numbers and other security verification info.

When I got back to my friend's place that evening I tried to log in and couldn't. There was a verification procedure I could follow but in the end FB said I'd need to wait 24 hours before gaining access again and te page would be down in the meantime. I figured, OK I can deal with it further tomorrow when I'm sober.

But the following day she had already gotten back in and posted personal and fairly explicit photos on my profile. I tried again to verify my identity with FB and again they accepted it but said I'd need to wait 24 hours before logging in again. Five minutes later she was back in.

I went to the police and filed a report but the police officer (a nice guy who genuinely wanted to help) really had nothing to say about the cyber stuff. (There was other real-life stalking going on as well). I got home and she had posted even worse video.

At this point, when I tried to do the "forgot password" verification, I only had 2 choices: either reset my PW through the fake email address that she created, or I could choose 3 friends who would be sent a code, who I could then call, get the code to provide to FB, which again locked me out for 24 hours. She was back in the next minute. And this is what I did all night. I have wonderful friends who took it very seriously and immediately provided the codes, but at some point X thought to unfriend some of them. (probably coincidentally, not because of the verification process). In any case I would provide codes, page went down, she was back in the next minute, wash rinse repeat about 5 or 6 times.

At some point FB no longer offered this other procedure and it was only through the email that she controlled that one could verify their identity. Holy fuck! I was losing my mind.

At this point there's nothing you can do. Absolutely nothing. After clicking "forgot password" there's the option of reset through that one email address or you can click that you no longer have access to that account, at which point FB simply says "sorry, you need access to a registered email to gain access to your account", and there's a link to help menus and stuff. None of the help menus, or various reports will get you anywhere I've tried them all.

(shit, apparently she's back in my account now unfriending more of my friends who I'm in contact with).

Anyway, there is absolutely no mechanism at this point to regain control. None. This is simply unbelievable. There are no email addresses or phone numbers or ways to report this.

The Samsung had my email password saved and from that I guess she got into my other accounts. I had my deleted mail recovered yesterday and I saw everything she did. About 15 or 16 emails in all where she did every step. I called a lawyer who is on the case but there's nothing he can do to get any immediate action. He has sent a letter to the offices in Dublin and I think contacted the police, but she could very well have control of my account for weeks.

This is truly a nightmare.

Anyone know if what she did is actually illegal in Germany, and what if so how is it even punishable?

Internet Marketing Search Engine Optimization SEM SEO service ...

Mobile marketing done correctly can be a significant boost to your business. A successful mobile marketing campaign does require that you do your research to get the best results. This can cause you to think just where you should start to increase your profits. Fortunately, much of the information you will need to begin implementing your own mobile marketing campaign is provided in the following tips!

If you run a business online, you are most likely aware that there are free apps available to offer to your visitors. However, do you realize that you can easily create your own apps? Your business could always offer its own special app and really take your mobile marketing to the next level. Research all the features that are available to you.

Use search engine optimization for your mobile website to get higher visibility and increase interest in your mobile marketing. The search engine used by most mobile devices is Google, so make sure you rank on the first page of the results.

Avoid sending texts to consumers in the early morning or late evening. Your customers may enjoy what you produce, but your awkward timing will likely not be well received.

The call to action you develop for your mobile marketing campaign should be user friendly and simple. Filling out a form is easy to do on a computer but can quickly become annoying on a smaller screen of a smartphone. It should be simple for your customers to sign up for your emails.

Although texting with abbreviations is commonplace nowadays, most people haven?t got a clue what they mean. People who do not understand your ad will ignore it, and that will result in the loss of potential customers.

Mobile Marketing

While mobile marketing is an effective way to connect with your customers, it is important to develop campaigns that work across multiple platforms. Customers are waiting out there with a plethora of different mobile gadgets; your marketing efforts will have no good effect ? or even a negative one ? if it doesn?t work with a customer?s particular device.

When creating a mobile marketing campaign you must focus on keeping your existing customers as opposed to gaining new clients. Your current customers will take much more kindly to receiving product updates and text messages than new customers. When new customers see mobile marketing efforts they usually think it spam.

Use mobile marketing in conjunction with all relevant online functions. Have marketing material that matches what you have on your mobile site?s landing page, and make sure that it?s designed to keep them on your website. You will sell more products on a site where people feel they can participate and interact, rather then just reading text.

Add maps and directions to your website that are mobile friendly. A lot of people use mobile websites to help them to get to different locations. Make it easy for them to get to you. Verify that the maps look great on mobile phones and come up correctly when doing mobile searches. Include a link that allows the customer to find your location through Google Maps.

By implementing the use of QR codes, you can broaden your customer base as you offer easily accessible information to customers. They can be used to share many things including both information about your product and discounts. Anyone with a smart phone can capture and use them. As you begin using these codes, you will be able to easily provide your customers with relevant information about your company and products.

It is important to have specific goals for your mobile marketing campaign. The first stages should be dedicated to figuring out what your intended outcome will look like. Are you using your existing customers to increase sales, or are you just trying to keep them around for future promotions?

Send coupons via Multimedia Messaging Service as a way to reward current customers or entice new ones. Attach promotional codes to your coupons to track which customers are using them. These codes can be linked to a mobile Web site with a special tracking code. You can use coupons to incentivize and reward loyal customers and attract new ones.

Begin by developing an appropriate database. Do not slap customers? cell numbers onto your subscriber list just because you have access to them. Get permission before adding anyone?s cell phone number to your list. You can either offer customers the ability to sign up online or let them text in a code; ideally, you should make both options available.

Do not overdo offer deliveries. Customers tend to respond more to offers that are only sent two to four times in a month. You want your customers to feel as if they are going to miss out on a fantastic opportunity if they don?t jump on the offer immediately. If people think that another, possibly better, discount will be arriving soon, they won?t jump on the current one.

Creating a mobile app with lots of helpful information for your target market is a great mobile marketing strategy. Those apps that offer the user a genuinely needed service are the most successful in popularity and profitability. You can use your app as a lead-generation tool for other products, or sell the app directly for profit.

Mobile Marketing

Location is of the utmost importance when you are engaging in mobile marketing. Much different to other marketing types, mobile marketing allows you to key in on your exact location. This opens up new location-based options that do not exist anywhere else. With some creative thinking, you can find ways for your company to benefit and profit from location awareness.

A mobile app may be just what you need. Customers can use the app to conveniently keep tabs on possible sales and special offers. It can build up your brand name?s recognition, and it will drive more traffic to your site. Ask a professional for help throughout the development process as app prices are variable.

Your emails will get a better response if they are mobile friendly. Instead of using links to access content, allow users to select phone numbers. If you do use links, you must be sure that the target page can be viewed easily on mobile devices. Many people check email on mobile devices, so use this to your advantage.

Mobile marketing requires much more compact usage of space, so you will need to plan your content to be more concise. Having tons of content will only serve to frustrate your customers, so keep your writing to a minimum. When you are dealing with mobile marketing, you should just keep it simple.

Marketing Campaign

When you are mobile marketing focus mainly on keeping customers coming back. Existing customers will have a better reaction to texts than new ones. Many times, unexpected mobile marketing messages come across as spam to the recipients.

A very beneficial thing to use when setting up a mobile marketing campaign is social media. Have people TwitPic your store or share a deal on your website, and reward them with a contest entry or coupon. Cultivating an audience-based buzz this way will multiply the impact your marketing campaign has.

Use your traditional website. If you need a simple way to get your viewers to take advantage of your mobile sites and smartphone apps, make sure they are aware of these by promoting them on your base website. Customers can view how to sync with you when they are away from the office once they visit your website.

Make it simple for your customers to forward your mobile marketing ads to their friends. Before you put the finishing touches on your promotion, be sure it is simple and desirable to forward it. For example, you might offer a prize to the recipient whose forwarded information brings the most new visitors to your website.

There are many free apps you can give away to customers, but it?s also not that difficult to create your own apps. When your business offers a specialized app, your mobile marketing efforts will really take off. Be aware that you have a variety of different options to use here.

So, as you have seen, it is true that mobile marketing requires research, work, and effort to start bringing in the profits. It is also accurate that in order to see results that you have to keep at it. Keeping the aforementioned tips in mind, you are well on your way to being successful with it.

Satellite data helps map the spread of an invasive reed

Phragmites australis, an invasive species of plant called common reed, grows rapidly into dense stands of tall plants that pose an extreme threat to Great Lakes coastal wetlands. Early treatment is the key to controlling Phragmites.

But how can these invasive reeds be eradicated before they take over their environment if we don't know where they are?

Now we do know, thanks to scientists from Michigan Technological University's Michigan Tech Research Institute (MTRI), the US Geological Survey (USGS), Boston College and the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). They mapped the US coastline of all five Great Lakes using satellite technologies. Combined with field studies along those coastlines to confirm the satellite data, the map shows the locations of large stands of the invasive Phragmites located within 6.2 miles of the water's edge.

The results of their three-year study are reported in a special issue of the Journal of Great Lakes Research focusing on remote sensing.

The Phragmites map is the first of its kind. Lead author Laura Bourgeau-Chavez, a research scientist at MTRI in Ann Arbor, Mich., calls it "a highly accurate data set that will allow national, regional and local managers to visualize the extent of Phragmites invasion in the Great Lakes and strategically plan efforts to manage existing populations and minimize new colonization."

Why is invasive Phragmites such a threat? The invasive form can out-compete native wetland plants for resources, quickly dominating wetlands. It displaces native vegetation and reduces the quality of the habitat, the scientists say, altering nutrients in the soil and water, decreasing the diversity of animals and plants that normally live there, increasing air temperatures, drying wetland soils and trapping sediments. Mature stands of Phragmites often reach 16-feet tall, interfering with shoreline views, which can lower property values.

Using synthetic aperture radar (SAR), the researchers were able to use the longer wavelengths of SAR (approximately 23 centimeters) to distinguish between high biomass invasive Phragmites and other types of wetland vegetation. It also helped them detect flooding under a canopy of plants. For the entire Great Lakes basin, the overall accuracy of the resulting map was 87 percent.

To validate their classification of the satellite data, similar information was collected by hand at random sites throughout the coastal wetlands of the Great Lakes during 2010 and 2011. By the end of 2011, a total of almost 1,200 half-acre field sites had been checked.

Lakes Huron and Erie turned out to have the greatest amount of invasive Phragmites. The project identified a smaller extent of Phragmites in Lake Michigan but only a few stands in Lake Ontario and almost none in Lake Superior.

Although other factors may be at play, it appears that climate is helping determine the northward range of Phragmites. Changing climate conditions, therefore, may have broad impacts on the distribution of Phragmites. With the developed dataset, scientists can effectively model future range extension and target control efforts. The methods developed in the project can also be used to re-map targeted areas in the future.

The Canadian coastlines of the Great Lakes were not included in this study due to financial constraints. In the future, the researchers hope to extend their mapping to the Canadian shores and further into the landscape than the current 6.2 miles.

###

The research project was funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency's Great Lakes Restoration Initiative through a cooperative agreement with the USGS Great Lakes Science Center and USFWS.

Can STIs Be Transferred From Oral Sex?

Yes. Pretty much anything you can pass during intercourse can also be passed during oral sex. Herpes? Yes. Chalmydia and gonorrhea? Yes. (They're both bacterial and can be cured with antibiotics, but there are more and more cases of antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea so you don't want to mess with it). HIV can also be passed during oral sex, but oral sex is actually a low risk for HIV transmission (HIV is more easily and commonly transmitted through anal sex and vaginal sex). Syphilis can also be passed during oral sex. As HPV is linked with certain head and neck cancers, HPV transmission during oral sex is now increasingly a subject of more scientific investigation and we need more data on it. More »

Wal-Mart To Sell iPhone 5, iPad As It Snubs Amazon Kindle

Wal-Mart To Sell iPhone 5, iPad As It Snubs Amazon Kindle

By Alistair Barr
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec 14 (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc said on Friday that it began selling Apple Inc's flagship iPhone 5 smartphone at a big discount in thousands of its stores.
Wal-Mart said it is selling the 16 GB Apple iPhone 5 for $127, versus an original price of $189.97. The price is valid with a two-year contract from wireless carriers Verizon, Sprint and AT&T, the retailer added.
Wal-Mart said it is also selling the 16 GB iPhone 4S and the 16 GB iPad with Retina display and WiFi at discounts.
The offers will be available for 30 days in about 3,000 of Wal-Mart's stores, which were not identified. They are not available online, according to the retailer.
Apple has focused on high-priced, premium gadgets for many years and has strictly enforced its prices with retailers and other distributors. However, a Wal-Mart spokeswoman said on Friday that the discounts were arranged with Apple.
"We worked together with them on this," the spokeswoman, Sarah Spencer, said. "They are a great partner."
Wal-Mart is pricing the iPad starting at $399, down from $499. Beginning Dec. 17 the retailer said it will throw in a $30 iTunes card.
Wal-Mart is selling the 16 GB iPhone 4S for $47, versus an original price of $89.97, it said.
Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
Wal-Mart's cooperation with Apple is a contrast to its relationship with Amazon.com Inc , the world's largest Internet retailer.
In September, Wal-Mart said it would stop selling Amazon's Kindle eReaders and tablets, placing a bet that consumers would be more interested in Apple's gadgets. This spring, Target Corp st opped selling Kindle devices.
