If you?ve lived in your home for several years, chances are you are ready for some new kitchen and/or bathroom cabinets. There could be several different reasons. Maybe you didn?t want to spend a ton when you built your house, so you opted for the low-grade option. Maybe the kids have been a bit too hard on the cabinets, and the wear and tear is really starting to show. Or maybe you are just sick and tired of looking at that drab cream color.

Whatever the reason, it?s probably time for an upgrade. But, many of us can?t afford an all-out cabinet overhaul. So what?s to do when something still needs to be done? Why not paint your existing cabinets! Painting your cabinets is a lot less expensive than getting all new cabinets. But it still provides a new feel and look that will make you feel like you just got completely new cabinets!

Here are 6 easy steps to painting your cabinets:

1. Take your doors off. Remove your doors from your cabinets. Remove your hardware from your doors. You can put your hardware in little baggies and tape them to the inside of your cabinets so you know which hardware goes to which door.

2. Sand your doors. You will want to sand your doors to give them a better surface for the paint to stick to. If your doors have a glossy finish, you?ll want to sand them pretty well. If they aren?t very glossy, then just a little sanding job should do. After sanding you can also use a gloss-off product (can be found at any hardwood store) to make sure you have the best surface possible. It is also a good idea to clean your doors and cabinets (many de-glossers are also cleaners, so look for one of those).

3. Tape your cabinets. Tape off your cabinets. You?ll need to tape off inside and outside of your cabinets before painting. You will also want to put plastic over your counters, floor, and appliances. This will probably be the part of the project that takes the longest, but it is well worth it. It is hard to remove paint drops and splatters from surfaces that you don?t want them on, so prevention is key!

4. Prime your cabinets and doors. As with any painting project (from painting walls to home theater screen paint), you will want to prime your doors and cabinets before painting them. And also as with any other painting project, make sure to let your primer dry completely before applying the first coat of paint. For the doors, you?ll want to find a well-ventilated area to paint in. Preferably an area that you don?t mind getting a bit dirty. A garage is a perfect option for this. Just open your garage door and go! If you don?t have a garage, you can also use your back yard, driveway, or even an unfinished basement (just open all the windows). Lay down newspaper, and then start painting.

5. Paint your cabinets and doors. Now to the fun part! Get to painting! You can either use traditional paint brushes (cheaper), or a paint sprayer (faster). Make sure to let each coat of paint dry completely before applying the next coat of paint, do avoid scratching or air bubbles.

6. Put your doors back on. Once all of your paint is completely dry (the timing of this will depend on what brand of paint you?ve chosen to use? just check the paint can), then you can put your doors back, and put the hardware back in place.

Now just sit back and enjoy your brand-new looking cabinets!

Coast Guard sets ballast cleansing requirements

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) ? Oceangoing cargo ships will be required to zap their ballast water with ultraviolet light, chemicals or other treatments before dumping it in U.S. waters under a regulation the Coast Guard announced Friday to prevent species invasions that damage the environment and cause billions in economic losses.

The long-awaited rule comes more than two decades after environmental groups began pushing for a crackdown on ballast water, which provides stability in rough seas but often harbors stowaway species from abroad. When the soupy mixtures of water and sediment are discharged in U.S. ports, the newcomers can spread rapidly, starve out native competitors and spread diseases.

Zebra and quagga mussels that hitched a ride to the Great Lakes from Europe in the 1980s have clogged water intake pipes, requiring expensive repairs, and are blamed for a Lake Huron salmon collapse and botulism that killed thousands of shore birds. Other invaders that arrived in ballast tanks include Asian clams in San Francisco Bay, Japanese shore crabs along the Atlantic coast and spotted jellyfish in the Gulf of Mexico.

"Once fully implemented, this ballast water discharge standard will significantly reduce the risk of an introduction of aquatic nuisance species into the Great Lakes," said Rear Adm. Michael Parks, commander of the Coast Guard's Cleveland district.

Under existing rules, shippers must exchange ballast at sea or flush the tanks with salt water if empty. But the Coast Guard acknowledged some organisms could survive in puddles of water and mud. For the first time, the new policy requires onboard treatment of ballast water to kill as many fish, mussels and even tiny microbes as possible.

"It's a major milestone and a starting point, but it's not nearly as strong as it should be," said Jennifer Nalbone of Great Lakes United, a U.S.-Canadian advocacy group.

The rule limits numbers of living organisms in particular volumes of water. Ships would have to install equipment to meet standards developed by the International Maritime Organization, an arm of the United Nations. Environmental groups contend the limits should be 100 or even 1,000 times tougher, but industry groups say no existing technology can do that.

A tentative version of the Coast Guard rule issued in 2009 called for starting with the international standard, then making it 1,000 times stronger by 2016. But the final regulation drops the second level in favor of more research.

The Coast Guard said it made the change after an Environmental Protection Agency study questioned the reliability of more stringent standards. EPA has proposed a separate ship discharge policy based on the international limits.

In a written statement, the Coast Guard said it "fully intends to issue a later rule that will establish a more stringent phase-two discharge standard."

Thom Cmar, an attorney with the Natural Resources Defense Council, said the delay was a step backward.

"For them to say they'll get back in a couple of years with an analysis of whether a stronger standard is achievable is cold comfort after it's taken so long to finish this round of rulemaking," he said.

Cmar also criticized a decision to exempt ships that remain within the Great Lakes from the ballast standards. Environmentalists contend those ships carry invasive species around the lakes even if they weren't responsible for bringing them to the U.S. The Coast Guard said research is needed into whether existing ballast technology would work on vessels that never travel the oceans.

Shipping interests were unhappy the Coast Guard dropped an earlier provision exempting vessels fitted with ballast treatment systems from having to modify them if standards are toughened in the future.

But completion of the rule is mostly good news for ship owners who have delayed installing equipment until they knew what would be required, said Steve Fisher, executive director of the American Great Lakes Ports Association.

"This will create a huge international demand for ballast water treatment equipment," Fisher said. "Companies that manufacture it will be able to justify spending the money for mass production. The most viable and cost-effective systems will float to the top."

Biologists find potential drug that speeds cellular recycling

A University of Michigan cell biologist and his colleagues have identified a potential drug that speeds up trash removal from the cell's recycling center, the lysosome.

The finding suggests a new way to treat rare inherited metabolic disorders such as Niemann-Pick disease and mucolipidosis Type IV, as well as more common neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, said Haoxing Xu, who led a U-M team that reported its findings March 13 in the online, multidisciplinary journal Nature Communications.

"The implications are far-reaching," said Xu, an assistant professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology. "We have introduced a novel concept?a potential drug to increase clearance of cellular waste?that could have a big impact on medicine."

Xu cautioned, however, that the studies are in the early, basic-research stage. Any drug that might result from the research is years away.

In cells, as in cities, disposing of garbage and recycling anything that can be reused is an essential service. In both city and cell, health problems can arise when the process breaks down.

Inside the trillions of cells that make up the human body, the job of chopping up and shipping worn-out cellular components falls to the lysosomes. The lysosomes?there are several hundred of them in each cell?use a variety of digestive enzymes to disassemble used-up proteins, fatty materials called lipids, and discarded chunks of cell membrane, among other things.

Once these materials are reduced to basic biological building blocks, the cargo is shipped out of the lysosome to be reassembled elsewhere into new cellular components.

The steady flow of the materials through and out of the lysosome, called vesicular trafficking, is essential for the health of the cell and the entire organism. If trafficking slows or stops, the result is a kind of lysosomal constipation that can cause or contribute to a variety of diseases, including a group of inherited metabolic disorders called lipid storage diseases. Niemann-Pick is one of them.

In previous studies, Xu and his colleagues showed that proper functioning of the lysosome depends, in part, on the timely flow of calcium ions through tiny, pore-like gateways in the lysosome's surface membrane called calcium channels.

If the calcium channels get blocked, trafficking throughout the lysosome is disrupted and loads of cargo accumulate to unhealthy levels, swelling the lysosome to several times its normal size.

Xu and his colleagues previously determined that a protein called TRPML1serves as the calcium channel in lysosomes and that a lipid known as PI(3,5)P2 opens and closes the gates of the channel. Human mutations in the gene responsible for making TRPML1 cause a 50 to 90 percent reduction in calcium channel activity.

In their latest work, aided by a new imaging method used to study calcium-ion release in the lysosome, Xu and his colleagues show that TRPML1-mediated calcium release is dramatically reduced in Niemann-Pick and mucolipidosis Type IV disease cells.

More importantly, they identify a synthetic small molecule, ML-SA1, that mimics the lipid PI(3,5)P2 and can activate the lysosome's calcium channels, opening the gates and restoring the outward flow of calcium ions.

When ML-SA1 was introduced into mouse cells and human Niemann-Pick Type C cells donated by patients, the increased flow through the lysosome's calcium channels was sufficient to speed trafficking and reduce lysosome storage.

Xu and his colleagues believe it might be possible to use ML-SA1 as a drug to activate lysosome calcium channels and restore normal lysosome function in lipid storage diseases like Niemann-Pick. The same approach might also be used to treat Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's, neurodegenerative diseases that involve lysosome trafficking defects.

Such studies might also provide insights into the aging process, which involves the very slow decline in the lysosomes' ability to chop up and recycle worn-out cellular parts.

"The idea is that for lysosome storage diseases, neurodegenerative diseases and aging, they're all caused or worsened by very reduced or slow trafficking in the cellular recycling center," Xu said.

Next step? The researchers hope to administer ML-SA1 to Niemann-Pick and mucolipidosis Type IV mice to determine if the molecule alleviates symptoms.

In Niemann-Pick disease, harmful quantities of lipids accumulate in the spleen, liver, lungs, bone marrow and brain. The disease has four related types. Type A, the most severe, occurs in early infancy and is characterized by an enlarged liver and spleen, swollen lymph nodes and profound brain damage by the age of 6 months. Children with this type rarely live beyond 18 months. There is currently no cure for Niemann-Pick disease.

VEVO launches redesign with Facebook in mind

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? With TV screens and social networking in mind, the music video site VEVO has launched a significant redesign.

The new VEVO features a bigger player, continuous playback of videos and personalized playlists synced with user iTunes libraries and Facebook pages.

VEVO, which is co-owned by Sony Music and Universal Music, debuted the new design Friday.

The Facebook integration will likely further stoke rumors that the social network is interested in purchasing VEVO. Michael Cerda, senior vice president of product at VEVO, declined to comment on those reports.

Cerda said the new VEVO was designed to transition the site from a "snackable" website to "a personalized, social and long form experience."

Cerda also said VEVO is planning to do "a lot" to migrate to TV screens, a prospect that will likely further comparisons of VEVO ? in its focus on videos and live performance? to a young MTV. VEVO is currently piped to TVs via Boxee and Google TV, but Cerda said VEVO will soon be connected to "other connected devices" like the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation.

In January, VEVO had about 717 million streams, according to ComScore.

We want to put an offer on a foreclosed home. The home needs minor repairs + some cosmetic changes to suit our needs and wants. Can someone give rough idea about following things?
1. Replacing broken slats of a wooden blind.
2. Refinishing worn hardwood (area around 700 sq. ft)
3. Putting a new hardwood floor (matching with the existing one- is it possible??) in family room ( 250 sq ft)
4. Changing wooden balusters to metal ones on the stair.

According to the U.S. Immigration Support website, ?Florida is home to 2.7 million, of 17 percent, foreign-born residents.?

Florida may be a melting pot for people of all sorts of nationalities but it is also a border state with an immigration problem, according to the Florida Immigrant Coalition. Except, people forget that there are two types of immigrants, illegal immigrants and legal immigrants residing in Florida and the latter is often overlooked.

The Balanced Politics website states that there is a common misconception of immigration always being bad for America because the ?illegals? are supposedly taking jobs away from unemployed Americans. One problem feeding the stereotypes is personal bias from people in power, whose views get projected onto television and broadcasted to the masses. Anyone including new legal immigrants can have a difficult time finding a job during rough economic times.

Many people such as Mark Krikorian, executive director for the Center for Immigration Studies, cannot get past stereotyping immigrants as unskilled people.

Krikorian said, ?It is obviously true that not all immigrants are Mexican illegal-alien gardeners, but most of the skilled legal immigrants we admit aren?t really all that skilled. In addition to a relatively small number of genuine Einsteins, the top people in their fields on the planet, we admit lots of average tech workers, who are certainly able to support themselves but aren?t special.?

According to Krikorian, such stereotypes exist because many media mongers are conditioned to believe that almost all immigrant workers take jobs as ?gardeners? or other blue-collar, labor-intensive jobs. And there is not enough sufficient data to say otherwise.

However, there another issue that people are having with legal immigration is in the increasingly huge number of immigrants that are entering the United States each year.

John Vinson, executive director of American Immigration Control Foundation, said, ?Legal immigration today is excessive. Today we?re admitting around one million legal immigrants and temporary visa holders a year. This has been going on for the past two decades, and constitutes the greatest sustained wave of immigration in our history. Most legal immigrants are not selected on the basis of needed skills but on the basis of their family ties to previous immigrants.?

According to Vinson, the volume of legal immigrants entering the United States only adds to the unemployment controversy.

Vinson said, ?With more than 20 million Americans unable to find full-time job, it simply makes no sense to keep admitting so many people. Since mass immigration took off around 1970, wage levels of Americans in constant dollars have risen little?due in some degree to competition from immigrants. This competition significantly harms disadvantaged Americans.?

Vinson does not see very many benefits to the American economy due to ?mass legal immigration,? although some people see immigration as a good thing because it helps to expand the nation?s culture.

Vinson said, ?The diversity brought by mass immigration is not our strength. Even Harvard sociologist Robert Putnam, a proponent of diversity, admits that the diversity now brought by immigration is undermining our social cohesion.?

Vinson argues that if legal immigration continues to increase, he projects that the United States will be in trouble in the long run, in terms of agriculture and jobs. Vinson theorizes that people do not realize how many resources an average person uses throughout their lifetime, and if more people keep coming in legally, there will be more of a demand for resources and the environment may not be able to supply everyone with what is needed.

Vinson said, ?If the current level of legal immigration continues, we will add 130 million more people in less than 40 years. Eighty-two percent percent will be immigrants and their descendants. This will place an enormous stress on our natural resources and the environment.?

Vinson proposes that there needs to be more strict immigration reform regarding how many people are let into the United States annually.

Vinson said, ?The problem is not (legal) immigration per se, but excessive immigration. Moderation in immigration, after years of excess, is what we should seek now.?

Nevertheless, Vinson is only one voice among many with an opinion on legal immigration. There are other advocates that are for legal immigration.

Enrique Morones, founder of Border Angels non-profit organization, believes that immigration is actually beneficial to the American economy. Morones finds American?s misapprehensions about legal and illegal immigration to be appalling considering the United States population is made up of a mash-up of national backgrounds.

Morones said, ?Immigration is good for the country. It is in large part what has made this country. Unfortunately it seems like lots of todays immigrants have forgotten their roots. It is important to remember that the majority of todays immigrants unlike yesteryears have no legal way of coming to this country, as their is no line for people of a certain socio economic level. Those same people coming in the last century did not have to worry of legal versus illegal they just came.?

According to Morones, illegal immigrant prejudice overcasts any accomplishments legal immigrants have made in the United States. Many legal immigrants are ?only looking for a better opportunity? than that which can be provided in their own country. Morones says most immigrants desire the American dream whether they cross the U.S. Mexican border through the dessert terrain or fly over in an airplane across the pond.

Moronoes knows that many legal immigrants actually do make something of themselves through determination and hard work. He says many legal immigrants achieve greatness in their professional career paths.

Morones said, ?Of the 10 and half million undocumented people in this country almost half are not from Mexico. But amongst those [legal immigrants] here we have doctors, lawyers, astronauts, teachers and virtually most walks of life that came here only way they could in desert or via mountains. There is now more than ever a need for humane immigration reform.?

Job-hunting can be difficult for any person during a time of economic turmoil. However, there are extra hoops for legal immigrants to jump through in order to receive a highly professional job in the United States.

Flagler College is a great example of a school that has highly professional immigrant teachers that have successfully achieved employment, according to William Abare, school president.

Abare said, ?Approximately one-tenth of our faculty were born in a foreign country.?

Abare does not believe that there is an immigration bias when hiring an immigrant employee. He says he views all applicants the same way when considering them for a teaching position.

Abare said, ?I do not think about their gender, their race, their native country, or other personal factors. We are very fortunate to have faculty members who are talented, dedicated, and competent.?

According to Abare, a person?s nationality does not matter. To him, the determining factor is a person?s character.

Abare said, ?When I think about our faculty, I think about their effectiveness as teachers, advisors, mentors, and valued colleagues. I also think about the many ways they contribute to the betterment of our college community.?

There is an entire process that foreign-born professors must endure before becoming a professor in the United States. But if the candidate is right for the college teaching job, the professor can achieve greatness in the academic field.

Yvan Kelly, Flagler College associate dean of academic affairs, said, ?I do know that for a professor to get a green card to work in the United States, there are special classes of employment that are considered. College teaching is one of those. So it is easier for a foreign born person to become a professor in the U.S. than it is for them to become a car mechanic.?

According to Kelly, there is a special selection process that goes into picking every professor at Flagler. However, the selection process is more rigorous for an internationally born professor because it is a huge investment for the school.

Kelly said, ?The only bias I can think of from a college?s perspective is if they have to sponsor the professor for the green card. That is a pretty expensive process, around $15,000 in total. So a school might want to select a domestic candidate for their faculty rather than a foreign candidate due to cost considerations.?

Perhaps, there is just an immigrant stereotype amongst mudslinging politicians made popular by activists in border states, but not in the hallowed halls of academia.

Running hot and cold in the deep sea: Scientists explore rare environment

Among the many intriguing aspects of the deep sea, Earth's largest ecosystem, exist environments known as hydrothermal vent systems where hot water surges out from the seafloor. On the flipside the deep sea also features cold areas where methane rises from "seeps" on the ocean bottom.

It's extremely rare to find both habitat types intersecting in one place, but that's what researchers found and explored during an expedition in 2010 off Costa Rica. A description of the scientists' findings, including a large number of mysterious, undescribed species, is published in a study led by Lisa Levin of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego in the March 7 issue of the Proceedings of the Royal Society B (Biological Sciences).

Because researchers who study such areas primarily focus on hydrothermal vent systems or methane seeps, Levin and her colleagues were surprised to find a hybrid site in an area where only cold seeps have been previously reported. They coined the phrase "hydrothermal seep" to describe the ecosystem.

"The most interesting aspects of this site are the presence of vent-like and seep-like features together," said Levin, "along with a vast cover of tubeworms over large areas and a wealth of new, undescribed species."

The researchers investigated the geochemical properties of the area?known as the Jaco Scar at the Costa Rica margin where an underwater mountain is moving under a tectonic plate?along with small organisms and microbes. Co-existing animals ranged from those known to primarily inhabit hot vents or cold seeps, along with "foundation" species that exist in both settings. Researchers recruited 14 men and women in their mid-20s who didn't usually exercise. After a short but intense spin on a bike, samples of their muscle tissue showed temporary, but big, changes in several types of epigenetic signals. Further tests showed that some of the same effects could be achieved with a jolt of caffeine.
