Who's YOUR Big Bad Mudder? - Operation Muffin Top - Connecticut ...

Hey everyone! Sorry for being so unresponsive the last couple of months, but my schedule has been CRAZY. Between Varsity Soccer practices and games and doing all of my homework, I?ve barely had time to breathe. But I?m BACK!!

I first want to congratulate everyone who participated in this weekend?s Tough Mudder (including my parents). I know how much hard work and dedication you all must have put into it! (Not to mention how much sweat and body temperature you must have lost).

But on the topic of hard work and dedication, I want to talk about that application to sports. My dad always tells me that I have to put in the extra time and effort if I want to be good at something, and not rely on natural athletic ability.

Athletic ability can only get a person so far. It can prevent a person from passing out after running a mile, getting the basketball close to the hoop, or getting the soccer ball to lift a few feet off the ground. But it won?t prevent a person from passing out after running a marathon, getting the basketball to swish through the hoop, or getting the soccer ball to sail fifty yards and into the goal to score the winning goal of the FCIAC finals. That all comes from extra practice and hard work.

I learned that over time. As I gradually committed more and more time to sports, I learned that there were more people out there?like me. These are people who think that they will play in the NCAA or play Varsity as a freshman in High School, solely based on their natural athletic abilities. It?s hard to compete with people if everyone is only playing basketball two times a week at practice, and once on the weekends for a game. My dad told me that I needed to put in the extra work if I was going to be different from these girls. So I did.

Five years later, here I sit, still doing what I strove to do five years ago. I play basketball more times a week than is designated on my practice schedule. I work out by myself when I feel like I need to get stronger.

I find it really easy now to distinguish between athletes who rely on what they were born with and those who go the extra mile every day.

So once again, I want to commend the participants in the Tough Mudder. You all really are the epitome of what my last five paragraphs were about. Good for you guys!!

Retirement is one fact which every individual has to understand. It doesn?t matter what you earn during your young and active days, but what really matters is how you will really plan your retirement. Your retirement is the time when you will not be earning and for this purpose, it is necessary that you plan everything out in a better way. Money is important for the retirement as during the old age you will not be physically in a position to earn for yourself or spouse. If you have good pension, then you can easily get the loan on it to plan your retirement in a better and successful manner. Retirement loans are really the best option which will make your retirement not only great but also let you lead the life full of excitement just like when you were young.

If you have become serious to know about the retirement loans, it is necessary that you check through the important questions which will help you to plan your retirement in a better and more realistic manner and at the end of day, place you in a better position.

What kind of retirement plan should I qualify with? There are several types of payments for which you easily qualify as a former military member, civil servant or the former employee of any big organization. However, make sure of one point here and it is that you are not eligible to use the VA payments or social security funds.

For the purpose of retirement loans, it is very necessary that you have certain basic sum of money available as equity so that every month you get the amount as decided upon it. If you are planning to go for good amount of money than quite importantly you need to have good sum collected in your bank account.

The interest rates on credit cards are usually high and more often at tomes it becomes difficult to pay off the money on credit cards, if you are not having great income resource. There are only few of the companies which are offering cash for retirement benefits and it is important that you look through the terms and conditions in their prospectus.

Does it require perfect credit to qualify for the retirement loans? It is necessary that you have good financial history at end of the day. This will help in keeping the situation within your control. If you have gone for Chapter 7 or 13 bankruptcies, it is better and you will easily qualify for the retirement loans more easily than anything else. It is important that you look for the best financial options right away to ensure better understanding.

'The Hobbit' to be released in Dolby Atmos

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Middle-earth will sound more realistic in "The Hobbit."

Dolby Laboratories Inc. and director Peter Jackson's Park Road Post Production announced Wednesday that "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" will be mixed and released in Dolby Atmos, the company's immersive new sound system that features two extra arrays of overhead speakers and the ability to direct sounds to individual speakers inside movie theaters.

"(Jackson) felt it was going to make a big difference in how he tells stories," said Stuart Bowling, Dolby's senior technical marketing manager. "He doesn't want people to just go and observe his movies. He wants you to feel like you're part of the experience of the stories that's he's trying to tell on the screen and allow you to be part of Middle-earth."

The director of the Oscar-winning "The Lord of the Rings" films adapted J.R.R. Tolkien's tale of Bilbo Baggins, set in the fictional realm of Middle-earth 60 years before "The Lord of the Rings." Besides the standard 2-D format, Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures are releasing the series in high-frame-rate 3-D, IMAX and other 3-D formats.

Bowling said Dolby's goal is to have the Atmos platform installed in 80 to 100 theaters in time for "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," which is scheduled to premiere on Dec. 14.

The second and third films, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" and "The Hobbit: There and Back Again," are set for release Dec. 13, 2013, and July 18, 2014.

Other movies slated to be released in the Atmos format include Fox's "Chasing Mavericks" and "Life of Pi." Disney-Pixar's "Brave" was the first film to debut with the audio format earlier this year.

Bowling said the company expects more than 15 films to be released in Atmos next year and hoped to have the system in 1,000 theaters by the end of next year.

"Dolby Atmos is fantastic from a sound quality position," said John Neill, head of sound at Park Road Post Production. "We can now hear full range surround speakers, meaning that when we pan from the front to surround, the sound does not change in quality. The overhead speakers give us the opportunity to place the theater patron really in the location."

Jackson shot "The Hobbit" in 3-D and at 48 frames a second, twice the speed that's been the standard since the 1920s. He received a mixed reception for high-frame-rate preview footage of "The Hobbit" at the Cinema Con theater owner's convention last year. Some thought the images were too clear and realistic, taking away from the magic of the film medium.

How to Get Permits for Your Home Improvement Project | Zillow Blog

By David De Vries

Getting a building or planning permit through a municipality is often time consuming and costly. Here are some helpful tips to get you through the process quickly and at a low cost.

Initial consultation

A lot of people start by talking to an architect or a designer without understanding their options. These professionals will charge you for information that the city or county can tell you for free.

Go to your governing municipality?s planning office, tell them what you?re thinking about doing and ask what your options are. Bring an aerial photograph of your property (Google maps) and sketches of your existing house and what you?d like to do. Take measurements of all of your rooms, the perimeter of your house and your structures and measure from your structures to your property lines (typically your fence line).

If your project is feasible, ask about the process. They will tell you either no permit is required or that a building permit is required and possibly planning permits such as a zoning clearance, design review, minor use or conditional use permits. Every municipality is different, so make sure to ask about the submittal requirements, review and processing times, cost and helpful tips to get you through the process quickly.

Many municipalities charge a flat fee for a combination plumbing, electrical and mechanical permit. To save on permit costs, it?s usually best to have one building permit for all of your improvements. Most permits don?t expire for six months and are renewed automatically with each inspection, so you?ll have time to get to everything.

Before you get a permit

Before you consider getting a permit for your home improvement project, be sure to obtain all of your existing permit records for the property. As part of the permit process for your new project, you may be required to obtain permits for any existing unpermitted improvements on your property. Permitting after construction is often much more costly and complicated.

To obtain records, contact your municipality?s planning or building department and ask for copies of all planning and building permits. Additionally, visit the county assessor?s office for the construction records on the property. The assessor?s construction records are often more up to date than the records from your local municipality.

Choosing your designer

If you?re required to do plans, you?ll need an architect or designer. A municipality may require an architect for your plan submittal. Architects are licensed by the state and are usually better overall, but they cost more.

Once you?ve got a few leads, ask each person what projects they?ve worked on, how many permits they?ve obtained and the timeline for each one. Also ask for three references from clients they?ve worked with and contact them.

Be aware that some architects and designers have a tendency to provide incomplete plans and respond to only a portion of the permit comments provided by officials. This will slow down your process dramatically and will increase your costs because many municipalities are on a deposit system and most designers and architects charge by the hour. If possible, get a price quote for the job with penalties for lengthy processing times. Regardless, get involved with the process, review the plans and the municipality?s comments and make sure everything is addressed prior to resubmittals.

While obtaining a permit may be a challenging process, the permit certifies the work is done correctly and helps the resale of your home. Getting involved with the process and ongoing communication with your designer and permit processors will help you get through the process quicker and for less cost. A friendly demeanor goes a long way with public officials. Good luck!

Music Review: Taylor Swift's 'Red' is mediocre

Taylor Swift, "Red" (Big Machine Records)

Taylor Swift's "Red," the Grammy winner's fourth album, is a 16-track set that has the singer continuing to step away from her country roots to take on a more rock and pop sound. The album features songs that are big and stadium ready (she has a U2-like moment on album opener, "State of Grace") and others that are soft and slow.

But while "Red" contains its share of winners, many of the songs lack the colorfulness and vitality the album title suggests, leading to an overall letdown. Lyrically and sonically, the album lacks oomph and feeling: It sounds like we've heard it all from her before (check "Starlight").

Hooking up with some new ? and popular ? producers seemed like a good move for Swift, who has worked with a supertight group of writers and producers on her first three albums (half of "Red" is produced by her longtime producer Nathan Chapman). Unfortunately, stepping out of her comfort zone doesn't always work.

Max Martin and Shellback, who have helmed No. 1 smashes for Maroon 5, Pink, Kelly Clarkson and others, have given Swift her first No. 1 pop hit with the juvenile-sounding anthem "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," which echoes Avril Lavigne in her teen years. "22," another Martin and Shellback collaboration, is an improvement, but not by much, with weak lines like: "Everything will be all right if we just keeping dancing like we're 22." The producers fare better on "I Knew You Were Trouble.," an adventurous track with Swift taking the bull by the horns, sounding aggressive over an electrified and electronic beat.

Jeff Bhasker, best known for producing the breakout album by fun. and songs for Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Lana Del Rey and others, is behind average songs like "Holy Ground" and "The Lucky One." Swift also works with Dan Wilson, a singer who has co-written two of music's best songs with the Dixie Chicks' "Not Ready to Make Nice" and Adele's "Someone Like You." His song with Swift, "Treacherous," is a good one.

The main issue with "Red" is that it sounds empty. There's nothing close to the country-soul ballads like the heart-wrenching "You're Not Sorry" and "White Horse" from her "Fearless" album, or even the emotion ? and magic ? on songs like "Never Grow Up" and "Enchanted" from 2010's "Speak Now." She gets close to reaching those touching heights on "I Almost Do" and the album's duets. English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran ? and Swift's falsetto ? shine on "Everything Has Changed," produced by Butch Walker (Lavigne, Pink, Dashboard Confessional). On "The Last Time," Swift takes a back seat to Snow Patrol lead singer Gary Lightbody, whose heavy and gravely vocals ride beautifully over the haunting beat, courtesy of producer Jacknife Lee. Too bad there's not more where that came from.

CHECK OUT THIS TRACK: "The Last Time" is refreshing.

Default Tricks ? Internet Hosting For Life Only A New Pattern Or The ...

Choosing the right Web Hosting bundle for you can be a bewildering task. With so many packages, prices, terms, circumstances, corporations and nations vying for your online business, it?s vital that you just understand what you need, so you may choose a company who can provide you what you want. Free Hosting is precisely that, and although the previous adage ?you get what you pay for? doesn?t exactly apply ? as you?re getting one thing, in spite of everything ? Free Hosting just isn?t recommended for anyone with any kind of serious aspirations for his or her site. Of course we provide Web Hosting so we might say that, proper? Nicely, the two foremost things to contemplate when taking a look at Free Hosting are 1 ? someone has to pay for it, and a couple of ? what occurs if something goes wrong.

So here?s an inventory of the key kinds of Web Hosting out there in the marketplace ? what they?re, and what they?re suitable for. And to make it a bit simpler, we?ll follow the career of Dave*, a budding internet entrepreneur making his first forays into the world of Web Hosting. With reference to the primary point, it?s typically the case that your Web Hosting is paid for by advertisements on your site, and as that?s what makes the Web Host their money, they might properly be as fascinated with promoting on your site as they?re in getting you to use their service to allow them to have extra adverts. This leads on to point ? what sort of support do you suppose you?re going to get from a company that is providing you with one thing totally free? What sort of guarantees can you?ve that your Web Hosting is reliable or safe?

Lastly, it?s best to think about the amount of disk area and bandwidth that your web host offers. Most internet companies provides you with more than enough house to host your internetsite so don?t be concerned about this unless you plan on storing a massive amount of large recordsdata or creating huge databases. The factor you actually need to look at is how a lot bandwidth the hosting company offers your small business every month. Bandwidth is principally a measure of how much person visitors your website can handle. If you don?t have enough bandwidth your website won?t be out there to your clients after the maximum bandwidth is exceeded.

To start off all you want is to make a listing of the content that you will put in your site, after which you possibly can obtain free themes or templates and hire someone to do it for you for a reasonable fee. Hiring somebody to create the content material primarily based in your specs shall be an enormous assist to you as it?ll save your time and loads of effort. Another side to contemplate in organising your internetsite is to find a good and reliable website hosting. That is the place you?ll upload you internetsite design and host all of your content. Purchase an inexpensive area from a well-known domain registrar and then search on-line for cheap hosting plans. You will discover that there are many sites that offer low-cost monthly charges to host your site. Managing your web server is pretty simple and you will not need a lot outside help.

A effectively-established internet hosting provider sometimes hosts as much as thousands of websites. For instance, iPowerWeb is a popular internet hosting firm that hosts greater than 300,000 internetsites. For that motive, an internet hosting firm want many web servers (basically, these are computer systems) to ?store? the netsite. And all these internet servers are linked to the Internet by means of high speed Web connection and housed in a bodily building known as ?information center?. So as to assure all the net servers are protected, safe and fully operational all time, a knowledge middle is a physically safe 24/7 environment with hearth safety, HVAC temperature control, virus detections, laptop information backup, redundant energy backup and complete disaster recovery capabilities.

Another issue it is best to think about is whether or not or not the hosting company affords you free credit score for online advertising services. Most individuals don?t take into account this earlier than they determine on an internet hosting company. Do not overlook this! Nearly all internet hosting firms offer coupons and discounts for popular on-line advertising and marketing companies, more often than not these coupons provide free service just for signing up with the hosting company! A number of the best web hosting corporations provide coupons without spending a dime search engine advertising and marketing from big media sites like Google, Bing and Facebook. I?ve seen companies supply up to $300 dollars in free promoting credit score to customers. Marketing your internetsite is the important thing to being successful. Moreover, some firms additionally provide money-back ensures for a certain period of time as a way to let you consider their services danger-free. Free things are all the time a pleasant little bonus.

For the details, Netfirms promo codes can provide you with the right price cut and marketing provide for Netfirms, and that is currently the best possible web site hosting provider using the web.

Marijuana use may cause severe cyclic nausea, vomiting, a little-known, but costly effect

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Marijuana use -- both natural and synthetic -- may cause cannabinoid hyperemesis (CH) a little-known but costly effect that researchers suggest is a serious burden to the health care system as it often leads to expensive diagnostic tests and ineffective treatments in an effort to find the cause of a patient's symptoms and provide relief, according to two separate case reports unveiled October 22 at the American College of Gastroenterology's (ACG) 77th Annual Scientific meeting in Las Vegas. Cannabinoid hyperemesis is characterized by a history of chronic cannabis use followed by a cyclic pattern of nausea, vomiting and colicky abdominal pain. Interestingly, compulsive hot baths or showers temporarily relieve symptoms, another characteristic which aids clinicians in diagnosis.

"Most healthcare providers are unaware of the link between marijuana use and these episodes of cyclic nausea and vomiting so they are not asking about natural or synthetic cannabinoid use when a patient comes to the emergency room or their doctor's office with these symptoms," said co-investigator Ana Maria Crissien-Martinez, M.D. of Scripps Green Hospital and Clinic in San Diego. She said CH was first described in a 2004 case series of 9 patients in Australia and since then, 14 case reports and 4 case series have been published, including a prospective series of 98 patients published by Mayo Clinic in February 2012.

"Patients who use cannabis whether natural or in synthetic form called 'Spice' also don't realize their unexplained episodes of cyclic nausea and vomiting may be a result of this use, with some increasing their cannabis use because they may think it will help alleviate their symptoms -- and it actually makes them worse," said Dr. Crissien-Martinez. "The only resolution is cannabis cessation."

Dr. Crissien-Martinez co-authored the case report, "Marijuana: Anti-Emetic or Pro-Emetic" which described a series of 9 patients with cannabinoid hyperemesis at Scripps Green Hospital with average age at diagnosis 30 years-old; 88 percent male; onset of cannabis use during teen years; 88 percent used cannabis daily; 56 percent compulsive bathing behavior; and 80 percent symptom resolution with cannabis cessation.

The other case report, "Spicing Up the Differential for Cyclic Vomiting: A Case of Synthetic-Cannabinoid Induced Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS)," may be the first reported case of CH attributed to synthetic cannabinoid, according to Fong-Kuei Cheng, M.D. and his research team from Walter Reed Walter Reed National Military Medical Center/Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD.

"Legal synthetic cannabinoids became available in the United States by 2009 with widespread usage among military personnel due to its ability to elude standard drug testing. It is important to recognize that routine urine drug testing does not include JWH-018 and JWH 073, which are the primary components in synthetic cannabinoids," said Dr. Cheng.

The case report described a 22-year active duty military male who was admitted with a 10-month history of progressive, intermittent abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, with episodes occurring every two months and lasting up to a week. He underwent several diagnostic tests before a urine synthetic cannabinoid test confirmed the diagnosis of cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS). Since discontinuing these drugs, the patient has remained symptom-free, according to the case report.

"This case illustrates that CHS should be in the differential diagnosis of unexplained, episodic abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting, particularly if relieved with compulsive hot showers. Recognition of this syndrome is important to prevent unnecessary testing and to reduce health care expenditures," said Dr. Cheng. "We have also noted, particularly in the active duty population where drug testing for cannabis usage is done routinely, that there appears to be an increased usage instead of the synthetic cannabinoids, so we would advocate routine additional testing for them when the clinical suspicion is high."

Patients frequently have multiple hospital, clinic and emergency room visits with extensive negative work-up to include imaging studies, endoscopies, and laboratory testing before they are finally diagnosed with cannabinoid hyperemesis, according to the researchers of both case reports.

"We estimate $10,000 to be the minimum cost of one admission -- but on average our patients required admission to the hospital 2.8 times, a total of almost $30,000 for workup," said Dr. Crissien-Martinez, who added that that cost does not include the added costs of primary care physician and/or gastroenterologist and emergency room visits, which averaged 2.5 and 6 times respectively.

Dr. Crissien-Martinez said that 80 percent of the Scripps Green patients who stopped cannabis experienced symptom resolution; however, only one of them remained abstinent and consequently symptom-free.

"As health care providers, we must be aware of the potential side effects of chronic cannabis use and understand that cannabinoid hyperemesis is diagnosed clinically to avoid expensive diagnostic and therapeutic modalities," said Dr. Crissien-Martinez. "Instead the focus should be shifted towards counseling and resources allocated towards marijuana cessation."

Italian Supreme Court Accepts Mobile Phone-Tumor Link

An anonymous reader writes with a link to this Reuters story, from which he excerpts: "Italy's supreme court has upheld a ruling that said there was a link between a business executive's brain tumor and his heavy mobile phone usage, potentially opening the door to further legal claims. The court's decision flies in the face of much scientific opinion, which generally says there is not enough evidence to declare a link between mobile phone use and diseases such as cancer and some experts said the Italian ruling should not be used to draw wider conclusions about the subject. 'Great caution is needed before we jump to conclusions about mobile phones and brain tumors,' said Malcolm Sperrin, director of medical physics and clinical engineering at Britain's Royal Berkshire Hospital. The Italian case concerned company director Innocenzo Marcolini who developed a tumor in the left side of his head after using his mobile phone for 5-6 hours a day for 12 years. He normally held the phone in his left hand, while taking notes with his right hand. Marcolini developed a so-called neurinoma affecting a cranial nerve, which was apparently not cancerous but nevertheless required surgery that badly affected his quality of life."

Pumpkin raisin muffins

Plump raisins in a pumpkin muffin with just a hint of toasted nuts.

Use your own oven roasted pumpkin pur?e for a fresher pumpkin flavoring in baked goods, such as these pumpkin raisin muffins.

Every fall, a pumpkin turns up in our lobby with my name on it. It?s from the seller?s agent who sold me my condo years ago.?The little sugar pumpkin usually appears bearing a recipe printed on orange paper rolled up in a scroll and rubber banded to its stem and a happy face penned in black marker.

Last year Miss Pumpkin even had a little Halloween bling with frilly black and orange ribbons. Fancy, Miss Pumpkin!

I decided I wanted to try making my own Miss Pumpkin pur?e for the attached recipe: Pumpkin and Raisin Muffins.?

My first batch of pumpkin raisin muffins was a little underwhelming in flavor. Maybe it?s because I had softened the pumpkin in the microwave like I have done for?spaghetti squash?in order to pur?e it. I still had half of Miss Pumpkin left. So for the second batch I tried roasting the pumpkin, based on the instructions from? The Gourmand Mom.

I also thought a nutty flavor would add an interesting secondary note to an otherwise ordinary muffin. I didn?t have quite enough walnuts so I combined toasted walnuts and hazelnuts and then grated them until fine in my?mini food processor.

The end result was delicious! Plump raisins in a pumpkin-y muffin with just a hint of toasted nuts.

Pumpkin Raisin Muffins
Makes 12 muffins

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup firmly backed light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup raisins
1/4 cup toasted and chopped walnuts or hazelnuts
1 cup pumpkin pur?e*
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup melted butter

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Butter a muffin tin.

Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg into a large bowl. Stir in the raisins, set aside.

Toast the walnuts and hazelnuts in a pan on the stove top stirring frequently just a few minutes. Be careful not to burn the nuts. If using hazelnuts, rub toasted nuts in a tea towel to remove skins. Blend in a food processor until fine. Whisk into flour mixture.

In a separate bowl, beat together the pumpkin pur?e, eggs, milk, and butter. Fold into flour mixture until combined.

Divide among 12 muffin cups, filling each tin about 2/3 full. You may have enough for an additional muffin or two. Or just make giant muffins.

Bake for 25-30 minutes in the center of the oven until well risen and golden, and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.

Leave in muffin tin for 1 to 2 minutes then transfer to a wire rack.

*Pumpkin pur?e

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Cut the pumpkin in half, remove stem, seeds and pulp. Turn the pumpkin face down in about 1/4 inch of water. Bake for 90 minutes. Scoop out the softened flesh and pass through a blender to pur?e.

The perfect helmet | julian, epilepsy, seizure - Life - The Orange ...

It was matte black and smooth. Protective, but not bulky; stylish, yet simple.

It took him awhile to find it:

David Julian poses on a bridge in his Santa Ana neighborhood. Julian wears his helmet most of the time because of epilepsy seizures and to raise awareness of the disorder. He heads the Epilepsy Connection which does education and advocacy.

PAUL BERSEBACH, THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

The perfect helmet.

A few months ago, David Julian, 44, of Santa Ana, strapped his new Nutcase brand helmet to his head and walked out of the store.

And it's been on ever since.

He's even decorated it. Bright, glittery stickers spell out phrases like "epilepsy" and "seizures suck."

Julian has epilepsy, and his seizures strike often enough that he needs to protect his head. So he wears a helmet; partly for protection and partly to raise awareness in the world about his mysterious condition.

And awareness is raised. Consider:

Places Julian doesn't wear his helmet: his bed; the shower.

Places Julian does wear it: At home. At work (when he can go). Doctors appointments. The pet store. Everyplace he goes after getting ready for the day.

He wasn't always so public about his epilepsy. Julian was 16 when he was diagnosed, following a gran mal seizure (a seizure in which the entire body convulses; his lasted 12 minutes), and, at first, he tried to distance himself from the disorder.

He told just one friend about his condition. And when he went to parties, he'd throw the alcohol he was given into potted plants, booze being less-than-excellent if you have a propensity for seizures.

"Nobody wants to be confronted by something that makes them weak," Julian says.

Now, 28 years later, Julian is the founder of the Epilepsy Connection, a nonprofit that raises epilepsy awareness and advocates for a cure. He helps host fundraising events and lectures, and his nonprofit recently raised $600 to buy a seizure monitor mat for a baby in Florida.

Far from being distant from epilepsy, Julian's lifelong battle of acceptance has left him immersed in his disorder.

Somehow, he has learned not just to accept his epilepsy, but to embrace it.

???

Marianna Watkins, Julian's mother, remembers a time when her son was in the seventh grade and couldn't get out of bed, his body ached so much.

But he didn't have a temperature, so she sent him on his walk to school anyway. Julian didn't complain. He'd rather push through than give up.

"Later, we realized he'd had a gran mal seizure in his sleep," Watkins says.

Along with the possibility that Julian could, at any time, die from a seizure-related injury, there is also the fear that he could die from SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy). SUDEP is a condition in which people with epilepsy die without a clearly defined cause. Fairly underresearched, SUDEP is not well-understood.

Julian's early adulthood was filled with depression and, he says, denial. After a violent seizure that left him hospitalized, Julian remembers coming home and debriefing with his mother and girlfriend. He was so frustrated that he punched a sliding-glass door, yelling, "My life is over. Why do I have these seizures?"

It was at this point that Julian began to accept his condition. "I decided, it is what it is," he says. He came to understand epilepsy and coexist with his weakness.

And things started looking up.

He met a woman online. He moved to New Jersey. And, at 28, he got married. With the birth of a daughter three years later, Julian had to think about more than just his condition.

And, for 11 years, Julian was seizure-free. To this day, doctors don't understand why his seizures were under control during that time.

But one thing was sure: Julian had a family to take care of.

???

Seizures are like earthquakes, says Ron Watkins, Julian's stepfather. They strike without either warning or compassion.

Because of that, the phrase "epilepsy awareness" ? which appears on Julian's helmet and various bracelets ? serve double duty as a public service message and a hint to strangers who might offer to help if he has a seizure.

"He is always prepared for the next earthquake," says Watkins.

But nobody can prepare for that first tremor.

When Julian's daughter was 3, Julian experienced a role reversal of sorts. On an airplane, his daughter had her first seizure. And Julian, the parent, saw epilepsy in an entirely new ? maybe even more frustrating ? light.

"I understood what my mom feels, what her heart does when I have a seizure."

His daughter, now 13, remains unaffected by the brief dip into her father's world. But the same could not be said for Julian. Something about the experience changed him.

"All the sudden, he saw that the world was bigger than just him having seizures," says Marianna Watkins.

Julian's seizures returned in 2006 and, soon after, he and his wife had divorced. Over the next year, he managed to cope with his seizures while living alone.

But one event left him hospitalized for three and half weeks, and his absence from work caused him to lose his job. With no income, insurance, or support system in New Jersey, Julian was helpless.

He had to choose: He could live in California with his parents' help, or stay in isolation and potential danger but live closer to his daughter.

In 2007, he chose a life of support.

Or it chose him.

???

"I'd better have a seizure while I'm wearing this helmet... at least one," says Julian, on a video taken with his cellphone.

Once his helmet became a staple of his daily attire, he started filming himself as he walked home from work.

Documenting the phenomenon and uploading it to YouTube was a way of raising awareness, but also a way of fighting the stigma.

"I couldn't care less about people saying something about the helmet," he says. "I want people to speak up and out about epilepsy."

Julian started speaking out when he came home to California in 2007. Later that year, with the help of Facebook, he founded the Epilepsy Connection as a resource for epilepsy-affected individuals.

These days, Julian is truly consumed by epilepsy. He manages his nonprofit, raising awareness and offering support. He attends doctor's appointments to try to get his seizures under control. He trains his epilepsy alert dog, Miss Chevious Allie Poochino (Allie for short). And, in order to be able to continue living independently, he sends a text message to a family member whenever he does something potentially dangerous ? such as getting in the shower or walking down the stairs.

But can an all-consuming epilepsy lifestyle be healthy?

Perhaps it takes a certain type of person to embrace weakness.

"This is my outlet" Julian says. "(It's) my evil, and everything for me."

Simple Tips For Better Online Marketing | Eric Chua : Life, Business ...

The following article contains a lot of easy-to-understand advice about Online marketing. These simple and effective strategies are easy to understand, so you can start using them right away.

Consider implementing a banner in your site with your business logo or mission statement. This helps to make the web site more professional and communicate your intentions to your visitors. Do this if you want to highlight the service that you offer.

Personalize all the correspondence you send to anyone in your mailing list. They are more likely to delete mass emails. You?re probably sick of it yourself. Targeted, personalized emails will make your business stand out from the rest.

TIP! You have to support any claims you make. Most people aren?t very trusting and need evidence.

Most people will respect someone with an important title. Of course, you can be this authority figure if you speak on your product in an informative, honest and compelling way. You have every right to identify yourself as the president or CEO of your firm.

Using a web page for public relations can be an effective way to market your business on the internet. Place content on this page that could have been published online. This method is a very easy and effective one for promoting your business to the masses.

Create sites on Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace to target a niche market. Don?t send spam on social networking sites or you may be sued for harassment.

TIP! It is important to keep tabs on user sentiment regarding online events, sales or other initiatives undertaken by your company. This will aid in future planning of marketing strategies.

Your emails are a vital tool in your Internet promotion efforts. It is important to protect the confidential information entrusted to you by your customers. Although free webmail is great, you have to be wary of services that automatically delete older messages. Complete access to your email history is absolutely vital. Think about making e-mail archive arrangements of your own, this is even more important if you have sensitive communication e-mails with customers or consultants.

Focus on a single, overarching goal for your website, then pursue it relentlessly. Decide what articles are best suited for you to write and find a good article directory. There are differing requirements from directory to directory. It may be about content length or about content density. Tailor your submissions to these requirements for the best results.

There are a lot of different strategies to use in order to market products online, and paying for ad space on various websites is one with a good track record of proven results. You can do this through companies, such as AdSense. You can get a lot of advertising for a decent price and minimal effort this way.

TIP! Writing a traditional ad will probably not work. This is because for many years, people have been bombarded with advertising that is misleading or flat out lies.

Provide a freebie to visitors of your website. Offer a screensaver or PDF file that can be downloaded from your website that contain helpful info that a customer may want to keep on hand about your product or service. The articles and information you offer to your customers should be relevant to your business. Your customers will know that you are interested in what they have to say.

Make sure to plan your content delivery so that customers can have more control over what they receive. There is too much spam and unwanted emails in the Internet world so make sure your emails are wanted and contain useful content. Always make it easy to allow customers to opt out of emails so that they don?t feel bombarded or stuck with no easy way out.

Do not go over budget when paying for advertising. You don?t want to pay a lot for anything that isn?t helping your business. Ensure you know exactly what you are getting for your money when you invest it in your business. For this reason, advertising using banner ads can be a smart investment.

TIP! Try giving free incentives to get more business. When you give things away for free, it is very easy for you to get your reputation up and for people to trust you.

Consider giving people different options on your site and once a week promote your products for wholesale price to give you some extra profits. A good way to sell more of a product is to go wholesale; you will still be profiting, just might not as much.

Web Address

Make sure your company website has a simple, easy to remember URL. When possible, the site name should incorporate your business?s name Of course, your customers could Google you; however, it would be a lot easier for them if you choose a web address that?s easy to remember. Then they will simply type your web address into their browsers.

TIP! Internet marketing differs from other types of marketing in some distinct ways. For example, what if search engines suddenly stopped using title tags as a means of determining search ranking? If this happens, you will have to adjust your marketing strategy.

Alter the links in your emails if you regularly use this method to communicate with your customers. If you information is redundant you will likely bore your customers instead of encouraging them to purchase products. Variety is the key to keeping your readers engaged.

Offer a free, branded promotional item in venues that promote such items. If you are offering a free e-book, the book should be submitted to the websites that offer e-books for free. Many websites are available that give out free e-content and are easy to submit too.

Generic Error

TIP! Make sure that your site is interesting and well-designed. The core of your Internet marketing is going to be the website you build.

It?s a great idea to customize your site?s 500 error page and make it a little more user-friendly. This type of error page will be seen by customers if something goes wrong with your website. Your generic error page provides information to the reader that the connection timed out. Customers will be less frustrated and more understanding if they do not get a generic error message.

In summation, you have been provided with some great tips with regards to Web marketing. Hopefully, you?ve learned tips you can use toward your Online marketing campaign. Follow our advice and you will be one step closer to being an expert in this subject, as well as more profitable.

DarwinCatholic: Liberal Arts: Adapting to Modernity

Last week I tried to expand a bit on the concept of the Liberal Arts as "the skills of a free man". I described the purpose of the ancient and medieval liberal arts education as being to develop a general and adaptable set of skills that allowed the liberally educated person to understand and reason about the world, and I attempted to contrast this type of education from being trained to perform some one task or set of tasks well.

The classic set of liberal arts is: Grammar, Logic, Rhetoric, Arithmetic, Geometry, Music, Astronomy

Some of these disciplines are defined rather differently now than they were in the pre-modern world, and the modern world presents its own particular challenges to understanding, so I think it's worth thinking a little on how one might update this list. The following is rather unrigorous, but hopefully the exercise of thinking it through is illustrative even if the conclusions are far from the last word.

History and Literature
In the classic liberal arts, one would have read and memorized a lot of this during one's early education, and since grammar and rhetoric were taught in the context of examples, one would also have studied much of the best historical, literary, legal and political writing of the age as part of learning grammar and rhetoric. Further, I'd argue that context in the doing and writings of people in other times and places is essential to help free one from some of the modern world's assumptions about how the world works.

Writing and Rhetoric
Not only is the ability to write and speak clearly and persuasively essential to communicating to others one's own ideas, but the process of writing or speaking in an organized and persuasive fashion can help one refine and improve one's thinking. Further, understanding persuasive and reasoned discourse can serve to help one see through the ruses of those who misuse those arts.

Philosophy
The ability to use logic remains as essential as in the ancient world, and the ability of think about ethical and metaphysical issues in some manner other than "feelings" is equally so.

Language/Grammar/Linguistics
I found my background in studying Greek and Latin surprisingly useful in mastering skills such as programming. While I certainly don't think that one must study the ancient languages, it seems like the process of learning how to express or understand thoughts conveyed in a language other than one's own allows to learn things about how thought relates to language that it's hard to learn any other way. In that regard, I feel like one of the major gaps in my education is that I never learned to speak a foreign language fluently (Greek and Latin being read rather than spoken languages, at least the way I learned them.)

Mathematics
This is an area where I wish I'd learned more when I was in school, though I've been able to make up some ground since. I went through calculus in high school, but I was self-teaching using the Saxon textbooks, and I never took any college level math classes, which I regret. I think one key element is that one should get far enough in math and geometry to deal with proofs and see the way in which logic and mathematics meet up: that there are abstract concepts which are absolutely provable which we can then turn around and see reflected in how the world works. Also, given the extent to which we live in a mass society in which statistics and probabilities are constantly discussed, I think freedom in the modern world almost requires a certain basic understanding of statistics and probability. Otherwise, one finds oneself at the mercy of those who use (or misuse) these arts.

Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc.)
Again, this is an area discussed so commonly (and receiving so much reverence) in modern society that some understanding is, I think, essential to the free life. Especially essential, I think, for those who are acquiring only a passing familiarity with science would be a conceptional and process understanding: how he scientific method works, what it's capable of determining, etc. Also, enough of the basics of physics, chemistry and biology to see how it ties in with the mathematics and geometry one has learned.

The more abstract elements of Computer Science and Engineering
Again, for the non-specialist, I think the key elements here would be on concepts that have more general conceptual application and that intersect with other fields. Thus, for instance, understanding how physics and geometry drive machine and architectural design elements. Some understanding of the problem solving methodology and process development aspects of engineering. The basic grammatical concepts of computer programming would also seem key (algorithms, loops, etc.) I'm tempted to say that some understanding of database concepts (normalized data, relating tables through keys, etc.) is also of general application, but I kind of suspect that this is over-reaching.

Political Science, Economics, Anthropology
Here I hesitate a bit, because it can get kind of sketchy pretty quickly how much can actually be known from the social sciences. However, there are definitely concepts and approaches to analysis that should be learned here.

What to make of these?

I think it could be useful to take a whole post to look at how the concept of a liberal arts education relates to real higher education as we find it these days, rather than taking this post to absurd length to try to address that as well. But let me at least touch on a couple things.

The scope here is necessarily very wide. The concept, after all, is of a general and adaptable education. I think the breadth is important. Fr instance, looking back at my own education I do regret that I took no college level math, science, computer science or economics. I've picked up amounts of these since, but I feel like I had a lopsided emphasis in my own education.

At the same time, different people have different interests and abilities, and so it seems clear that different people would put far more emphasis on certain areas of the liberal arts than others. This seems fine and indeed very good. I don't want to try to make a case against specialization in study (I think there's a particular value to having a field of specialization and knowing one subject area quite well) but in keeping with the idea of a liberal education it seems to me there has to be some breadth as well as depth.
