Let Me Do All The Talking - Small Business Trends

conference business cartoon

This is a pretty good joke. Not great, not bad, but pretty good. You?ve got your standard phrase with a funny scene and sort of a ?well, of course? gag. And it sells, which in the end is really what you?re looking for. But it?s also one of those cartoons where I like to imagine the scene immediately after the scene we?re presented.

Think about it. A room full of people who are apparently waiting to hear what this guy has to say, and then he walks in with a ventriloquist dummy. Does he give a funny presentation? Does he do it straight? Does he acknowledge the oddness of what?s happening, or does he present this as perfectly normal?

And as much as you?d think I should know what happens (I created it after all), I don?t. But I?d really like to find out.

CarBot lets you settle those grudges with battle mode

CarBot CarBot lets you settle those grudges with battle mode

If you prefer your robots a little more terrestrial, there's Desk Pets' CarBot, a buggy that can do tricks, navigate mazes, and race with -- or fire on -- your buddies. The cars can be controlled by a free app installed on any iOS or Android Device, and allow up to four players to duke it out in multiple play modes. For mayhem lovers the most popular may be "battle," allowing you to fire on rival cars to disable them, along with a personality mode for freestyling and a drift 'n' race option. There's even a maze mode, in which the tiny wheeled bots use their infrared sensors to avoid objects with "military precision," according to the company. The built-in battery will give you 25 minutes of playtime for every 45 minutes of USB-based juicing, and each CarBot will set you back $30. Check out the PR and video after the break to let the rolling deathmatch commence.

Business Travel musings from the Business Travel Show, 5-6 Feb ...

My colleague Katy Phelps wrote the prequel to this blog - Travel and Meetings Convergence, Myth or Reality? Part 1 ? you can find it here. In her blog, she spoke about the convergence between the worlds of the corporate travel buyer and the corporate meetings buyer and how, on the whole, this crossover was a myth. And it?s true, the cross over is small, especially when it comes to trade shows, but crossover there is. There are two areas where I believe it is most apparent. The first is at the strategic procurement level (ie where large multinational organisations are spending a lot of money and big savings are to be had). The second is the booking of spaces for regular small meetings (where only the tiniest of margins exist and minimum savings can be made). Strategic procurement in the meetings industry ? also known as strategic meetings management ? is mostly the domain of large multinational organisations that have the buying power to procure meetings services in the way they procure business travel. These organisations often have procurement managers that deal with meetings and travel whereas in other, smaller companies, it?s not necessarily seen as a procurement function.???? These category specialists are responsible for agreeing the terms of contract with two or three suppliers in every category ? from AV, production and creative, to venues, delegates and, of course, travel. They also look after their organisation?s large meetings. Their purpose is not to coordinate the creative elements of travel and meetings (which is best left to the event managers) but rather to consolidate the procurement of these functions and their suppliers. Do this well and considerable costs can be cut. The other area where there is crossover between travel and meetings is in the procurement of high volumes of small meeting spaces by an organisation for, for example, sales meetings, training sessions, board meetings. In recent years, this function has increasingly become the responsibility of business travel managers who are able to draw on their experience and knowledge of consolidating large volumes of travel to transfer these procurement skills to the meetings category. Procurement managers are driving this consolidation of meetings spend because it gives them increased buying power, which leads to cost savings. And so, in my opinion, the convergence between travel and meetings is very definitely a reality; it?s just that it?s a reality that is limited to certain job functions and it?s the business travel managers who are taking on meetings management but not vice versa. This is why at Centaur we have unique exhibitions for each industry and why, at TheMeetings Show UK, you?ll find no business travel content, but at the BusinessTravel Show you will find meetings management suppliers and educations sessions dedicated to meetings management and procurement in the conference programme.

India restores power after huge blackouts

India restored its power supplies on Wednesday after two days of massive outages that blacked out half the country, but fears remained that the grid could again collapse under the strain of over-demand.

India's electricity network was back at full capacity after three regional grids failed on Tuesday in the country's worst power crisis that left more than 600 million people without supplies.

"It is a very difficult and challenging situation, and solutions will have to be found," new Power Minister Veerappa Moily said after confirming that the northern, eastern and north-eastern networks were back on line.

"I'm not going to start with a blame game. The centre and the states will have to work together on this," he added, as wary consumers who are used to regular load-shedding braced for the possibility of more serious disruption.

Hundreds of miners were trapped underground for hours in the eastern states of West Bengal and Jharkhand on Tuesday, metro services were stopped temporarily in the capital New Delhi and hundreds of trains were held up nationwide.

Traffic snarled in cities as traffic lights failed and hospitals and airports had to switch to back-up power.

"On Monday the government said that this will never happen again but on Tuesday they proved themselves wrong. How can you trust them anymore?" said Revathi Nair, a 32-year-old manager with a five-star hotel in central Delhi.

Former power minister Sushilkumar Shinde, who was promoted to home minister on Tuesday in a reshuffle announced in the midst of the crisis, said India should be more grateful for the efforts of its engineers and bureaucrats.

"Where in America the grid doesn't get repaired for four days, here we repair the grid in several hours," he told reporters, repeating a boast that India had been more reactive than the US, which suffered a huge power failure in 2003.

"You should appreciate us, the way work is done in the power ministry," he added.

Wednesday's newspapers were predictably critical of the government, saying it lacked the political will to implement long called-for reforms in the power sector to boost production and sort out near-bankrupt state distributors.

"Powerless and Clueless", ran the front-page headline in the Times of India, while the Economic Times splashed with "Superpower India, RIP" in a reference to New Delhi's bid to be recognised as a global economic and diplomatic force.

On the streets of Delhi, small business owners seethed over the failures which caused computers to crash and expensive diesel generators to be called into action.

"I spent over 2,000 rupees (about 40 dollars) yesterday just to buy diesel for my generator," said Ram Prasad Kejriwal who runs a shop selling shawls on a commercial street in the capital. "The entire day's sale was only 5,000 rupees."

Business lobby group the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) estimated the losses to small and large business in billions of rupees (tens of millions of dollars) and said India's investment image abroad had taken a major hit.

The repeated outages "carry a very negative image of India, when already sentiments about the country are low on account of the current economic situation", CII director general Chandrajit Banerjee said in a statement.

According to senior ministry officials, the two successive days of grid failure were triggered by energy-hungry states drawing power beyond their allocated limits.

"We're facing power problems of Himalayan proportions," said Ajay Bodke, strategist at leading Indian investment house Prabhudas Lilladher. "Reforms can't wait any longer -- this is a wake-up call for immediate measures."

Analysts say the power ministry needs to get state electricity boards to abide by their power quotas and manage distribution efficiently to avoid demand crunches.

The finances of the distribution companies also need fixing by raising prices and cracking down on theft, which would allow them to invest more in their strained networks, they say.

Finally, coal shortages are at the root of many of the problems because of the inefficiency of state-run giant Coal India Ltd (CIL), which is struggling to increase its production to meet the demand from power stations.

India added 20,000 megawatts of power capacity in the past year -- enough to supply today's requirements, according to Alok Brara, publisher of the industry magazine Powerline.

"But because of fuel issues they haven't been able to use the extra capacity," he told AFP.

Dula Notes ? Kale and Garlic Scape Pesto:

The first time I tried kale, it was true love. Its mild flavor, versatility and wonderful health benefits won me over quickly. It can be juiced, baked?or?saut?ed. Its exterior repells water better than most greens and that attribute allows it to hold up remarkably well in soup?or as a pizza topping.

I recently was caught up in a personal Vita-Mix demonstration at Williams Sonoma and went from, ?That?s crazy expensive? to ?I need one? in about 20 minutes. She talked about smoothies, homemade peanut butter, soup and ice cream. I hung on her every word until she told me that she hated kale. WHAT? I was no longer under her spell and I asked her if she?d ever tried kale chips. She made a face with a look in her eyes that told me not to suggest anything else that involved kale passing her lips. Maybe if we would have high-fived over our love of kale, I would have purchased the Vita-Mix. We?ll never know.

I received a bunch of kale in my local vegetable box and wanted to try making kale pesto. The shock of bright green on the pasta made for a beautiful meal and it was satisfying, too. I used pecans ?in this pesto and I thought it was delicious without distracting?from a traditional pesto flavor. The texture was just right.

Pesto and pasta are a natural pairing, but you can also use pesto instead of tomato sauce on pizza or spread it on toasted baguette slices and top with summer?s freshest tomatoes. A dollop on scrambled eggs sounds like a pretty good idea, too. It?s sure to never go to waste.

Recipe: Kale and Garlic Scape Pesto Pasta

Adapted from Farmhouse Table, serves 4-6.

1 bunch kale, washed and torn from the tough stem

1 bunch garlic scapes, woody ends removed and roughly chopped (or 2 garlic cloves)

1/2 cup raw peacans

1/4 cup grated parmesan, more for serving

1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil

sea salt to taste

1 pound rigatoni pasta (or your favorite)

1. Prepare a large bowl with cold water and ice. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the kale (that has been washed and removed from the tough stems) and using tongs, plunge kale into the boiling water for about 30 seconds and quickly transfer to the ice bath.?Squeeze kale to remove most of the water and place in a food processor.

2. If making pesto pasta, bring water back to a boil and cook the rigatoni pasta according to the directions on the box.

3. To the kale in the food processor, add roughly chopped garlic scapes (or garlic cloves), pecans, parmesan and a generous pinch of salt. Process until finely chopped. With the processor running, slowly stream in the extra-virgin olive oil until the pesto comes together. Taste and add more sea salt to taste. Scrape down the sides of the processor and process again to completely blend.

4. Drain pasta and mix with the batch of pesto. Stir gently until the pasta is coated. Serve immediately with extra parmesan, if you like.

Internet Billionaire Creates Huge Physics Prize

This guy's mistake is selecting too few winners and giving them too much.

If he wants to promote the field, he needs to make the rewards more broadly available: i.e., instead of 3, $3M awards, how about 300 $30,000 awards? It's enough to provide good incentive while not removing the need of the winners to ever have to work again!

That's the problem with the current economic model. A few "winners" at the top and everyone else lives on the crumbs.
Consider, those "winners" are maybe only.1% better than the next guy below him.

But the next guy below him? His reward is NOTHING, not $2M.

How about you make "winners" out of the top 50% instead instead of just the infinitesimal ever-so-slightly-better????
