Exclusive: Pentagon threatens legal action over bin Laden book

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon warned on Thursday that it was considering legal action against a former U.S. Navy SEAL for material breach of non-disclosure agreements with his his first-hand account of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

In a letter obtained by Reuters, and subsequently released by the Pentagon, the Pentagon's top attorney also warned that it was also considering legal options against anyone "acting in concert" with the author.

The letter, addressed to "Mark Owen," the pseudonym under which the book was written, identified two separate non-disclosure agreements he signed with the Navy that legally committed him to never divulge classified information.

"You are in material breach and violation of the non-disclosure agreements you signed," the letter by Jeh Johnson, the Pentagon's General Counsel, said.

"The Department of Defense is considering pursuing against you, and all those acting in concert with you, all remedies legally available to us in light of this situation."

U.S. officials said last week they were surprised by the book, which was not vetted by government agencies to ensure that no secrets were revealed.

The book has received widespread media coverage and the Pentagon letter noted that some copies have already been released, even ahead of the book's formal release next week.

"Further public dissemination of your book will aggravate your breach and violation of your agreements," the letter warned.

Earlier this week, the author said in a statement from his publisher that the book was written "with respect for my fellow service members while adhering to my strict desire not to disclose confidential or sensitive information that would compromise national security in any way."

But many in the special operations community have privately expressed disappointment in recent days over the book and the publicity it has received.

The author now faces threats against his life. An official al Qaeda website last week posted a photograph and the real name of the former Navy commando, calling him "the dog who murdered the martyr Sheikh Osama bin Laden."

Edith Maxwell: Two Years of Blogging

Edith Maxwell: Two Years of Blogging

Two Years of Blogging

I

'm a little late with this. I somehow missed the two-year anniversary of this blog, which was August 7. I got a little closer last year with? One Year in the Blogosphere.?

My goal when I started was one post per week. I pretty much stuck to it: 106 posts over two years. I let up a bit on frequency this summer. Hmm, think moving and getting two books out had anything to do with it? Plus I've been blogging every few weeks over at the Sisters in Crime New England group blog, Pen, Ink, and Crimes, which sometimes uses up all my available blogging energy.

A post I wrote about doing research on the Crane Estate in Ipswich has gotten a lot of steady traffic. But besides that, the top three posts have to do with finding the space to write: Retreating to Write, my report on Wellspring House, and Gathering to Write, about a four-writer retreat I was part of in June. I guess most of my readers here are writers (or would-be writers longing for retreat). Total comments for the two years is 519. Average of 5 per post? Seems high, but then those count my replies to all you kindly (and MUCH appreciated) readers who leave a comment.

One interesting stat: the first year more readers viewed the blog on Firefox than on Internet Explorer. That flipped this year, with a new fourteen percent on Chrome (what I use exclusively).?More people continue to use Windows than Mac, although one percent read it on an iPhone. Other mobile devices are still under one percent.?

At the end of last year's anniversary post, I noted that I would "continue blogging on topics relating to Speaking of Murder (book One), Murder on the Beach (book Two), and, of course, writing and publishing." At the time I didn't have a publisher for Speaking of Murder, and now it's coming out in print (under a pen name) from a reputable small press, Barking Rain, in less than a month. See Tace Baker's web site for details, or preorder it!

And the Local Foods Mysteries series wasn't even a gleam in Kensington Publishing's eye at the time. Now it's a three-book contract signed, sealed, and delivered, and I'm about to send the completed and many-times-revised manuscript of A Tine to Live, a Tine to Die off to the editor this Friday! Watch for that release next June

That's a big change in a year's time. ?I wonder what will happen in the next year. Despite several articles that foretell "Blogging is dead," I plan to continue for at least one more year.?

I thank each and every one of you for being a faithful or even occasional reader, and I'll randomly pick one commenter from today's post and send him or her a signed copy of Speaking of Murder, so be sure to leave a valid email address if you think I don't know how to find you otherwise.

Finally, do you think blogging is worth it? Do you read blogs regularly? Still write posts alone or with others, or has Facebook taken over that role? What do you think is next on the horizon?

Pets and More Pets ? How to revive an unconscious dog

Seeing a pet lose consciousness would be a very traumatic experience for a pet parent. Although pet owners are always advised to remain calm when faced with emergency situation to be able to help the pet, keeping calm would be very difficult to do. It is not surprising for the whole family to panic if the dog is seen unconscious because dogs are highly valued pets.

Loss of consciousness is one of the difficult health concerns of dogs due to the fact that there is a whole range of reasons why this condition would occur. Any dog owner would know at once what must be done to a bleeding wound but not a lot of dog owners would know what has to be done to an unconscious dog. An unmoving dog that has pale lips and gums and glassy unseeing eyes would be reason enough for a pet parent to panic. A dog that has lost conscious may or may not breathe. The dog may or may not have a pulse either.

Many health concerns have unconsciousness as one of the symptoms. The pet?s condition can be due to poisoning or to the ingestion of objects that have blocked the airway. Epileptic attacks, head injuries that cause cerebral hemorrhage are some of the reasons why a dog can become unconscious. Prolonged unconsciousness especially if the pet has stopped breathing could have irreversible effects thus it is imperative for first aid to be administered at once. Unconsciousness can lead to the death of the pet especially if the pet has stopped breathing and no first aid treatment was administered given that all the vital organs of the body will be starved of oxygen.

First aid for an unconscious dog that is breathing and has pulse is to conserve body heat. The unconscious dog has to be covered with a blanket or a jacket. The dog?s hindquarters must be slightly elevated than the head.

If the dog is not breathing, the head must be extended and the mouth inspected for any foreign object that blocks the airway. Artificial respiration has to be administered immediately. Close the mouth of the dog and breathe deeply into the dog?s mouth. The breaths administered should inflate the lungs and make the chest move. CPR must be administered if the dog has no pulse or if the heart is not beating. For every ten heart massage two rescue breathing must be given to the unconscious dog. CPR must be continued while the pet is being transported to a veterinary facility.

Stephen Hawking to help open 'inspirational' Paralympics

A spectacular opening ceremony was set to ring in the biggest ever Paralympic Games on Wednesday, with Stephen Hawking, Britain's most famous living scientist, expected to feature in the ceremony at London's Olympic Stadium.

Hawking, who has motor neurone disease and has been paralysed for most of his life, was set to appear alongside a cast of more than 3,000 at the ceremony, where Queen Elizabeth II will officially open the Games.

A record 4,200 athletes are taking part in the Paralympics across 20 sports, with the event expected to sell out for the first time and win its biggest ever television audience.

Double amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius is among those gearing up for 11 days of competition at the stadium, where the curtain came down on the Olympic Games just two weeks ago.

The Paralympic torch arrived in London early Wednesday after travelling in an overnight relay through the English countryside.

It was lit at Stoke Mandeville -- the hospital that is the spiritual home of disabled sport -- on Tuesday evening and carried 148 kilometres (92 miles) southeast by 116 teams of five people.

Cheers and prayers met the flame as it arrived in northwest London at the Shree Swaminarayan Hindu temple, before travelling through the British capital past famous landmarks including Westminster Abbey and Piccadilly Circus.

The torch was heading east for the start of the ceremony at 1930 GMT, which will be watched by some 80,000 people in the stadium.

Organisers have described the ceremony, which is named "Enlightenment", as a "celebration of the inspirational spirit of the Paralympic Games that challenges perceptions of human possibility".

The British Paralympic Association (BPA) has said the ceremony will be "groundbreaking in its inclusivity and innovative staging", showcasing deaf and disabled artists.

It has been created by artistic directors Jenny Sealey and Bradley Hemmings, both of whom have a long history of hosting live shows involving disabled performers.

"Aerobility", a British charity that trains disabled people to become pilots, will perform a fly-past, the BPA said.

Across the 11 days of elite disability sport, the International Paralympic Committee predicts a global television audience of more than four billion -- a record for the Games, which first took place in Rome in 1960.

Organisers believe much of the interest has come after a successful Olympics for British athletes, which saw the host nation finish third in the overall medal table behind the United States and China.

Britain is also considered the "spiritual home" of the Paralympics, as the first recognised sports events for athletes with disabilities was held in Stoke Mandeville in 1948.

The sporting action begins on Thursday, with shooting set to provide the first gold of the Games in the women's 10m standing air rifle.

Medals are also up for grabs in the velodrome with the finals of the men and women's individual pursuit, in four weight categories in judo at the ExCel Arena and at the Aquatics Centre, where 15 swimming finals are to be held.

The showpiece athletics programme gets under way on Friday with the spotlight on South Africa's Pistorius, who is seeking to defend his T44 100m, 200m and 400m titles from Beijing four years ago.

Pistorius, dubbed the "Blade Runner" because he runs on carbon fibre blades, made history earlier this month by becoming the first double amputee to compete in the Olympics when he ran in the 400m heats and 4x400m relay final.

But on Tuesday he played down expectations of repeating his Beijing treble, with Britain's world-record holder Jonnie Peacock and world champion Jerome Singleton of the United States likely to feature in the 100m final.

"It's important to note that I haven't run a 100m personal best in five years. It's not really my event," he told a news conference, adding that he would "be happy" with a medal of any colour in the blue riband sprint.

Argentine unions, bosses agree on minimum wage hike

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Argentina's government, unions and industry leaders agreed on Tuesday to raise the minimum wage by 25 percent as inflation shows few signs of cooling despite a slowdown in Latin America's No. 3 economy.

The minimum salary will rise in two stages to 2,875 pesos a month (US$621) from the current 2,300 pesos a month, although the full increase will not take effect until February.

It is the ninth straight year the government has raised the minimum wage. Salary increases are closely watched as an indication of real inflation in Argentina, where official consumer price data is widely discredited.

"I'm very pleased to be part of this agreement between workers and bosses," President Cristina Fernandez told union leaders and business leaders gathered at the Labor Ministry.

Minimum wages will rise to 2,670 pesos from September 1 and to 2,875 pesos from February 1.

Private economists put inflation at more than 20 percent in Argentina, one of the region's highest rates and about twice the rate reported by the official INDEC statistics agency.

Insert Coin: Public Lab DIY Spectrometer wants to be the 'Shazam of materials'

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

Insert Coin Public Lab DIY Spectrometer wants to be the 'Shazam of materials'

Spectrometers are a pretty invaluable piece of lab equipment. They make it rather simple to identify substances by analyzing the light that they absorb. Problem is, for the hobby scientist, they typically cost thousands of dollars. Jeffrey Yoo Warren's latest Kickstarter project aims to put these powerful tools in the hands of your average Joe, with an open-source DYI model, where the key ingredient is a shard of DVD-R. Using that piece of plastic in conjunction with black paper and a webcam, his $35 kit allows anyone to quickly and easily reveal the spectral fingerprint of any substance. There's even a $5 model that works in conjunction with a free Android app, turning your smartphone into a legit lab tool. The goal, ultimately, is to build up a library of substances that can easily be matched with samples caught in the wild -- in essence, to build a "Shazam for materials." The original inspiration was an effort to identify contaminants left behind by the BP oil spill, but Warren also touts its ability to reveal hidden dyes in laundry detergents and to differentiate wines or olive oils. For those with grander ambitions, a $300 pledge will score you a pre-built and calibrated desktop spectrometer, complete with pyrex dishes and a full spectrum lamp. To help fund this backyard (or back pocket) science revolution, hit up the source link.

Lindsay Lohan: Off the Hook in Burglary Case as Witnesses Refuse to Come Forward!

Lindsay Lohan has escaped again. She will NOT be prosecuted for her alleged role in the theft of more than $100,000 in watches and sunglasses this month.

According to the D.A.'s office, there is insufficient evidence to bring a burglary charge against the star, despite Lohan being the prime suspect in the caper.

One key component: The D.A. feels Lindsay and Sam Magid, who owns the house that was allegedly burglarized, have had a "longstanding relationship."

Sam also did not identify the actress as a suspect and other witnesses "have refused to become involved." Also, no suspects were found with stolen property.

Case closed.

Lindsay Lohan's Red Hair

Lindsay's assistant Gavin Doyle, who was also considered a suspect in the theft occurring a week ago Sunday, will not face prosecution either, TMZ reports.

"The District Attorney's Office received no evidence that any jewelry, including watches, was taken," according to a statement released by the office.

"The evidence presented to us was valued at $6,400 and included $3,000 in cash, four pairs of sunglasses, an iPod and keys to two cars and a house."

The key here is that the initial theft complaint, which included $100,000 worth of watches and sunglasses, never made its way to the D.A.'s office.

Most likely this is due to the fact that Sam was not ready to go to war against LiLo, who fingered Andrew Knight (son of Suge) for the pilfering.

Deadly bombing hits loyalist funeral outside Damascus

A car bomb rocked the funeral of two government loyalists in a Damascus suburb killing 12 people on Tuesday as the army kept up its bombardment of rebel strongholds in the east of the capital.

The bombing hit Jaramana, a mainly Druze and Christian town on the southeastern outskirts of Damascus that the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights described as generally supportive of the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

"At around 3 pm (1200 GMT), a funeral procession was making its way to the cemetery, when a car parked on the side of the road exploded," an army official told AFP.

"Another 48 people were wounded, many critically," state television said.

The Observatory said the funeral was for two Assad supporters killed in a bombing on Monday.

The force of explosion completely demolished the facade of one building and caused heavy damage to others nearby, an AFP photographer reported.

State media blamed rebel fighters for the bombing, which came amid an intensified bombardment by government troops of eastern districts of Damascus that shelter some of the Free Syrian Army's best organised battalions.

But the opposition Syrian National Council accused Assad's regime of staging the bombing against its own supporters in a bid to divert attention from the killings of hundreds of people during an army assault on a largely Sunni Muslim suburb of the capital last week.

"The regime wants to cover up for its massacres," SNC spokesman George Sabra said, alluding to the discovery of more than 300 bodies in the town of Daraya that sparked an international outcry.

"It also wants to punish residents of Jaramana -- who are of mixed religious backgrounds -- for welcoming people who were displaced from nearby towns." Sabra told AFP by telephone.

"It wants to turn the revolution... into a bloody civil war fought along sectarian lines," he said.

Some 80 percent of Syrians are Sunni Muslim, while around 10 percent belong to Assad's Alawite community, five percent are Christian, three percent Druze and one percent Ismaili.

The opposition draws much of its support from the Sunni majority, who have borne the brunt of the government's crackdown.

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt warned Tuesday of the risks of Syria descending into bloody sectarian conflict after what he said was the inevitable fall of Assad's regime.

"Whether it will be replaced by a secular democracy, an Islamic one or by a sectarian fragmentation remains to be seen." Bildt said. "The longer the conflict lasts, the greater the risk that we will see the latter development."

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported fierce shelling of northeastern neighbourhoods of Damascus as the army pressed its drive to push rebel fighters out of the capital.

Among the districts targeted was Qaboon where rebels from the Free Syrian Army claimed to have downed a military helicopter on Monday.

The rebels opened what they described as a new front in the east Damascus at the weekend after a major offensive by the army last week against their positions southwest of the capital, including in the town of Daraya.

Outside the capital, the army hit rebel positions in second city Aleppo as well as in Idlib province, in the northwest close to the border with Turkey.

A bombardment of the Idlib village of Kfar Nabal killed at least 13 civilians, two of them women, among at least 97 people killed nationwide.

Activist network, the Syrian Revolution General Council, said that warplanes had taken part in the assault and released gruesome footage of dozens of residents desperately combing the rubble of apartment blocks for survivors.

Rescuers were seen loading charred bodies onto the back of a truck in the footage which could not be independently verified.

Activists say around 25,000 people have been killed since the uprising against Assad's rule broke out in March last year, while the United Nations says more than 214,000 people have fled to neighbouring countries.

Underscoring the growing humanitarian crisis, it emerged that seven Syrians, two of them children, who attempted to flee the conflict by boat earlier this month, drowned off the coast of the nearby Mediterranean island of Cyprus.

The office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees said it was the "first case" of Syrian refugees trying to make the 100 kilometre (60 mile) sea passage.

"It is hard to know if this is a trend," UNCHR spokeswoman Melissa Fleming told reporters in Geneva.

She also said there had been a two-fold increase in arrivals in recent days at a refugee camp in neighbouring Jordan, where officials reported more than 20 police wounded on Tuesday in clashes with stonethrowing residents protesting living conditions.

It was the second time in less than a week that the Jordanian security forces had intervened in the Zaatari camp. Last Thursday, police dispersed a group of refugees who had clashed with warders who had prevented them from leaving its confines.

The Top Email List Building Rules For Online Marketers | Article ...

?

There are some very important email list building rules that must be used in order to build what should be the most valuable asset of any online marketer?s business. Once you have built an email list that you have cultivated to the point where you are trusted by your members, where they feel a bond and will follow your recommendations then it really is possible to use such a list as a cash point.

Yet to get to that position, you really have to be disciplined and ensure you are using every rule to your advantage. Also, an email list does not have to be large to be financially worthwhile. Some of the most profitable lists are the ones where there may only be a few thousand, or even a few hundred, but where the members stay for a long period and trust you implicitly.

The first rule is to view your prospect and customer email lists as assets. This really is the best asset your online business can have, knowing that the list you have built now has a relationship with you and even feels that they must continue to rely on your for their information. Add in trust and it is a very attractive financial position to be in.

It is so important to stay away from the sell, sell, sell type of online marketing. There is nothing worse than continually receiving email after email from online marketers who keep pushing the latest ?must have? secret or solution. They are not trying to build a relationship with their email list but all they are interested in is the sale. And the problem they encounter is that they must keep toping up their list with new prospects as there will be a high unsubscribe rate.

The next rule is to use more than one list building source. Don?t ever rely on just one source of targeted traffic arriving on your opt in page. There are many ways to attract such traffic such as blog posts, online articles, press releases, audios, videos, comments left on group pages and forums plus also using social media in specific ways. Different parts of your target market will be located in different platforms around the internet so it is the information marketer?s job to go and hunt them down.

When you generate traffic from many sources then you must continually test the results rather than say creating one landing page or sign up box and leave it there for ever more. You have to test different types including using different wording, images and placement on the page. It can sometimes come down to changing one word that makes the sign up rate skyrocket. And don?t neglect to track your results to find what set up is the most optimum for you.

Following on from that, don?t ever buy email optin lists which are email addresses that are offered for sale. These lists are cold, don?t know who you are and are a waste of money. So just avoid them. Lastly, it really is advantageous to trial and see how social media can assist with your email list building. This can be very effective if used to raise your profile, generate a conversation and get those who have shown an interest in you to seek out further information. Just make sure you don?t use this platform for selling.

So there are the six email list building rules to abide by to create for your online marketing business an ever expanding email list filled with prospects that want to receive more information from you and are interested in learning from you. These make the ideal customers though it does take time and effort to get to the stage where a recommendation from you will result in a whole load of sales.

A man holds a placard with a picture of Michelle Martin during a march to remember the victims of Belgium's child killer Marc Dutroux, in Brussels, Sunday Aug. 19, 2012. Some 2,000 demonstrators have protested the possible early release from prison of the ex-wife of a Belgian pedophile, who was an accomplice in his abuse and murder of young girls. The protesters braved some of the year's hottest weather of 35C (95F) and blazing sunshine on Sunday to show their displeasure with the possibility that Martin could move to a convent after her conditional release. Martin was convicted to 30 years in prison for helping her husband kidnap, rape and kill several young girls in the 1990's. She has served 16 years of her term but could be released within weeks. (AP Photo/Geert Vanden Wijngaert)

(AP) ? Even after all these years, the mere mention of the name "Marc Dutroux" can wipe the smile off the face of almost any Belgian.

And now that the convicted pedophile and killer's ex-wife ? an accomplice who let two of his victims starve to death ? is on the verge of release, Belgium is being forced to relive some of its darkest moments.

On Tuesday, the nation's highest court will likely approve granting Michelle Martin conditional freedom, even though she served little more than half of the 30-year sentence she was given for her part in the mid-1990s kidnappings, rapes and killings. One of Belgium's most loathed criminals could walk free within hours or days afterward.

For many in this country, memories that had been largely buried are now resurfacing.

"We are scared for our children, obviously, for the other children as well," said Celine Doignies, a bar owner in the village of Malonne where Martin is expected to move into a convent as part of the conditions of her release.

Martin depicted herself as a more passive culprit than Dutroux, acting on the whims of a psychopath. But she is still blamed for aiding her then-husband's depraved and murderous spree, and is particularly loathed for letting two 8-year-old girls starve to death while Dutroux was briefly imprisoned.

The Court of Cassation will decide on appeals from the prosecutor's office and the families of victims on Tuesday and rule if procedural errors were made in the decision of a lower court to approve Martin's conditional release. Barring such errors, nothing stops her from leaving prison.

Dutroux, who was an unemployed electrician and convicted pedophile on parole at the time of the crimes, was convicted eight years after his 1996 arrest of abducting, imprisoning and raping six girls between the summers of 1995 and 1996. He was also found guilty of murdering two of the six girls, who ranged in age from 8 to 19 years old.

The two 8-year-olds starved to death in a secret basement dungeon built by Dutroux, who left them in Martin's care while he was serving four months in jail for theft. The last two kidnap victims came out alive after the police took action.

The Dutroux case was a watershed moment for the nation. It ended decades of social tranquility and rattled the government system as little had since World War II. In a nation of 10 million at the time, one demonstration drew more than 300,000 angry people onto the streets of Brussels to demand immediate change.

Beyond the gruesomeness of the crimes, the population was infuriated by the ineptitude of the police and judicial systems, which left several glaring opportunities to catch the criminals ? and save lives ? go to waste.

An investigator heard voices in Dutroux' cellar next to the dungeon but didn't take proper heed. Authorities spread over different judicial districts failed to communicate properly. A parliamentary inquiry laid bare many other ailments in the police and justice systems, laying the cornerstone for reforms.

"We often talk about the pre- and post-Dutroux era," said Professor Brice De Ruyver, head of Ghent University's Institute for International Research on Criminal Policy. "It has almost brought the country, at that time, balancing on a state of revolution."

But when it comes to the judicial system, many people say the reforms did not go far enough, and the Martin case has brought those concerns to the forefront.

Under Belgian law, release is possible after a convict has served one-third of his or her sentence, including credit for pre-trial detention. It is rarely questioned for common criminals, but obviously in Martin's case, a lot of emotion is involved.

Dutroux himself was sentenced in 2004 to life in prison with no possibility of parole because, the judge said, of "the danger he represents to society." Some of his victims' parents are now galvanizing the public once again as they demand that Martin, too, stay in jail.

"What does one have to do to serve a full sentence?" asked Pol Marchal, who lost his 17-year-old daughter, An, in the killing spree.

Marchal is demanding a bigger say in the decision on whether Martin should be released. He and Jean-Denis Lejeune, the father of another victim, went to see Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo last Friday, and Di Rupo promised more reforms.

"I understand the emotions of the families and the population," Di Rupo said. "The abominable crimes are still very much in our memory."

De Ruyver said the public's confidence in the justice system remains "extremely low. This is, for a democratic state of law, a very explosive situation."

"Those who are responsible for justice reform haven't yet succeeded in making clear to the public that justice is now functioning better than during Dutroux' times," the professor said.

Again, protests have been staged, including in Malonne, the home of the Clarisse convent some 75 kilometers (45 miles) south of Brussels.

There, if she is released, Martin will have to work some 20 hours a week to pay for lodging and she will have to meet weekly with authorities to determine the extent to which she is meeting the conditions of her release. In theory, she has limited freedom to move.

De Ruyver mentioned several reasons why Martin should not yet be released, foremost among them being that early conditional release is meant to help reintegrate a person into society. That is the opposite of what Martin will be doing if she shelters in the Clarisse convent of Malonne, he said.

"She is hiding herself from society, going to a monastery and living there, in a closed community. This is not taking back your place in society," he said. In addition, he said, "If society says 'I don't want you back,' you have a big problem."

The extent to which that is the case with Martin is underscored by the special measures authorities will have to take to protect her from possible attacks if she makes it to the bucolic convent. Media reports say some 40 police will guard the convent day and night, at a cost of 5,000 euros a day.

That alone is another sore point.

"You cannot underestimate the enormous cost of law enforcement being operational there and at the same time not be used in other, more important aspects of crime fighting," De Ruyver said.

Lejeune, whose daughter Julie was one of the girls who starved to death, was pessimistic that the parents could at this point keep Martin in jail, noting they've been unable to find a legal basis for it.

But, he added, "regarding others who have committed equally bad crimes, there will be reform taking shape in the justice department."

Why conventions are now about personalities, not policy

TAMPA, Fla. ? It?s one of the most memorable moments in convention history: Franklin D. Roosevelt telling a rapturous Democratic convention in 1932, ?Eleven years ago, I lost the use of my legs; for many days and nights, I questioned whether life was worth living. But, with the love and support of Eleanor, I learned to stand and walk again; and I believe with all my heart that America, now paralyzed by Depression and privation, will stand and walk again.?

You don?t remember that? Of course you don?t. FDR never would have put such a note in an acceptance speech. It wasn?t until Richard Nixon introduced the ?politics is personal? trope that the self-revealing anecdotes took hold. Now, try to find a convention acceptance speech without one.

Back in the day, the only personal touch in FDR?s 1932 address was when he acknowledged that he had broken with tradition by flying to Chicago to accept the nomination in person. He then went on to propose ?a New Deal for the American people.? (That?s the line everyone does remember.)

Nor did Dwight Eisenhower bring the 1952 GOP convention to a hushed silence by recalling the agonizing wait to learn if the D-Day invasion had succeeded, as he thought back to his childhood in Kansas and the values his parents taught him.

And you can read through John Kennedy?s 1960 acceptance speech without finding a single reference to his heroics in the Solomon Islands during World War II. However much his political career was aided by the story of his attempts to save his surviving crew in the sinking of the Patrol Torpedo boat PT-109, JFK had other goals in mind for this speech: Namely, to proclaim, ?We stand at the edge of a New Frontier.?

What?s so striking about these speeches is how anachronistic the absence of emotionally powerful narratives seems. In the modern acceptance speech, the personal is indeed the political; it has become as significant a part of the address as any statement of philosophy or policy. That?s why it?s a near-certainty that Governor Mitt Romney?s speech Thursday night?or at the very least his wife Ann?s speech Tuesday evening?will include a story about Romney?s childhood, or a challenge involving friends or family, designed to reveal a living, breathing human being with life experiences, hardships and even sorrows much like those voters face.? Just as likely, the candidate will cite by name a famer or factory worker or struggling working mom, to prove that he?s been touched by the people he?s met.

Fittingly, Richard Nixon began this practice with his 1952 ?Checkers? speech, which was the first to recognize the power of television to present (or misrepresent) a politician as an everyman.

And in his ?68 acceptance speech, Nixon went even further, making biography the climax of his oration, evoking the memory of a child:

"He hears the train go by at night and he dreams of far away places where he'd like to go?He?s helped on his journey through life [by] a father who had to go to work before he finished the sixth grade, sacrificed everything he had so that his sons could go to college. A gentle, Quaker mother, with a passionate concern for peace, quietly wept when he went to war but she understood why he had to go. ?And tonight he stands before you?nominated for President of the United States."

It was the first of many such evocations, all to say, ?I know what your life is like because it?s not that far from my own.?

George H.W. Bush, looking to erase the image of a blue-blood aristocrat, looked back during his 1988 speech to his younger days:

"We lived in a little shotgun house, one room for the three of us. Worked in the oil business, then started my own?. Moved from the shotgun, to a duplex apartment, to a house. And lived the dream?high school football on Friday night, Little League, neighborhood barbecue."

And then Bill Clinton struck a far more dramatic chord at the beginning of his 1992 address:

"I never met my father. He was killed in a car wreck on a rainy road three months before I was born, driving from Chicago to Arkansas to see my mother. After that, my mother had to support us. I can still see her clearly tonight through the eyes of a three-year-old, kneeling at the railroad station and weeping as she put me back on the train to Arkansas with my grandmother."

But no one had a more wrenching, riveting personal story than John McCain, whose speech in 2008 concluded with his story of imprisonment and torture in North Vietnam after he refused early release:

"After I turned down their offer, they worked me over harder than they ever had before, for a long time, and they broke me?I didn?t know how I could face my fellow prisoners. The good man in the cell next door to me, my friend, Bob Craner, saved me. Through taps on a wall, he told me I had fought as hard as I could. No man can always stand alone."

There is something discordant about a team of speechwriters and political operatives hammering away to create an image of the ?real, inner? candidate. And, to be blunt, there is no necessary connection between a moving life experience and the skills necessary for leadership. (Check out FDR?s track record as a parent.)

Still, there?s no getting around the reality: Our would-be leaders and their aides are convinced that without that personal, moving narrative they cannot forge that bond with voters. It would be refreshing if Romney were to say in his speech: ?I have lived a privileged life, one of wealth and comfort. But I know how to fix this broken economy?and that is what matters.? And Romney has, in fact, hinted that he may avoid the personal tales in favor of policy during his address.

It would be encouraging to believe that that train has not left the station. I know, because as a young boy, I heard that train whistle in the night, and?

You could be surprised at how many people are actually turning to the Internet nowadays in order to begin making extra money simply because many people are losing their jobs. With regards to making cash on the web there are ways that people can in fact become rich. To find the correct facts, you will need to learn as much as you possibly can regarding the latest Internet advertising and marketing information. There?s a lot of hype online, which far too many people fall for. Just about anything that promises amazing wealth without even working is hype, and you should not pay attention to it.

Having said that you need to realize that more individuals are becoming millionaires online than anyone else who starts any other type of business. Of course, if you are one of the few individuals who get the correct information and training you?ll also have the ability to make money on the web. Despite the fact that it takes time to make cash on the internet you are going to discover that there are several suggestions that will help you speed up this process. You can not expect to receive something out of nothing, because building an internet business will take hard work and time. An online business can be created faster than one in the real world, and considerably cheaper, but it will not happen overnight.

You will need to find a system that actually works, and copy it until you have it perfected. People who do not make money instantly will often go to another type of business, but you have to stay dedicated to one business model and not bounce around. Something else people do is expand too quickly so ensure you are proficient in the strategy you?re currently using before you expand. Of course, do not forget about the training you?re going to need in order to become profitable. If you have ever tried to put together something without directions you understand how difficult something such as that can be. You have to know basic skills before you start building your Online business, it doesn?t matter how much time it is going to take, or how much it costs. Although you can use just the basic information to be able to get started you will discover that with advanced training you will have the ability to generate a larger income. So long as you continue to educate yourself on Internet Marketing and advertising your profits will continue to grow as well.

Something I would highly recommend is that you make certain that you have a site of your own, irrespective of whatever else you may hear. By having your own site you?ll be able to begin to brand yourself as an authority in whatever field you decide to enter. One of the advantages of having your own website is in time you?ll continue to get more and more website visitors to this web site. Developing your own website is a thing that you are able to do on your own so you do not need to pay other individuals to do this for you. That can be quite powerful if you take what is known about maleenhancementreviewsx.com and put it to use. We all know how much people like to complain about things, and that is one thing that really hardly ever gets anything done.

Of course people are aware of their conditions, which most do not like, but there is some kind of habit of never doing anything about it. There is really a form of momentum in our lives, and the hard part for most is just simply getting started.

Half the battle with anything is making decisions and following through with them. As you can see, we are not done yet ? please keep reading to learn more. Most web hosts provides you with programs to help you build a web site and you are able to also get information on different forums.

There are a great amount of scams on the net, so make sure you do your research before beginning your business. Once you have a good business plan and put forth the time and effort you are going to have the ability to wind up in the 5% of men and women who will achieve success online.

Mass murderer Anders Breivik jailed for 21 ... - World News Tomorrow

World News

WORLD NEWS TOMORROW ? MASSACRE monster Anders Breivik grinned as judges jailed him for 21 years for taking the lives of 77 people.Breivik, who admitted the killings, was declared sane by the court ? and told he must serve a minimum of only ten years.

The 21-year sentence is the maximum term that can be imposed in Norway but officials can prevent his release indefinitely and are expected to do so if he still poses a threat.? Breivik, 33, flashed a clenched-fist salute as he appeared in Oslo District Court to receive his judgment and smiled as it was read aloud.

Was Anders Breivik a MK Ultra project of the CIA ?

Wearing a dark suit and sporting a thin beard, the killer smirked as he walked in to the court room and raised his fist. Breivik, blew up the Oslo government headquarters with a fertiliser bomb, killing eight, before gunning down 69 at a summer youth camp.? Breivik had rejected prosecutors? arguments that he was mad, and had said he would appeal if he were ruled insane.

Judge Wenche Elizabeth Arntzen said: ?In a unanimous decision ? the court sentences the defendant to 21 years of preventive detention.??? If Breivik had been declared insane he could have been detained for life in a mental hospital. He will be kept in isolation inside Ila Prison on the outskirts of Oslo inside relatively spacious quarters that include a separate exercise room, a computer and a television.

People of the world wake up ! He murdered 77 people.? Whats going on here in Norwegian ? What is the Norwegian court hiding?

Criminal guilt was never an issue as Breivik acknowledged and described in horrific detail his murders.? He told the court that he did not recognize their authority as he pleaded not guilty to the massacre in Norway last July. He admitted he was behind the twin terror attacks but said that he carried them out in SELF-DEFENCE. His 10-week trial focused on his sanity, with prosecutors arguing he should be declared insane and held in a mental hospital, not jail.

Throughout proceedings he showed no emotion when the chilling details of his 77 victims? horrific injuries and deaths were read out. The court heard the racist maniac was a vain metrosexual who used make-up and modeled himself on David Beckham.

What is the Norwegian court hiding?

Tropical Storm Isaac lashes Cuba, with Florida Keys in sights

HAVANA (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Isaac, back over warm ocean waters, lashed Cuba with winds and rain as it swept toward the Florida Keys, where it was expected to strike at or near hurricane strength on Sunday.

The storm left six dead in Haiti, still recovering from a 2010 earthquake, and at least three missing in the Dominican Republic after battering their shared island of Hispaniola on Saturday.

No deaths or injuries had been reported in Cuba, which got off lightly when the storm crossed its eastern flank instead of raking up the length of the island as originally predicted, but it still sustained damage.

Isaac was expected to strengthen to a Category 2 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 105 miles per hour, as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico before making landfall at midweek on the U.S. Gulf Coast, somewhere between Florida and Louisiana, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

At 8 a.m. EDT (1200 GMT) Sunday, Isaac was about 135 miles east-southeast of Key West and packing top sustained winds of 65 miles an hour, according to the Miami-based NHC.

The storm's driving winds and heavy rains were already being felt intermittently across south Florida and it was expected to be at or near hurricane force when it swept across the Florida Keys by Sunday evening, the NHC said in an advisory.

A storm becomes a hurricane when sustained winds reach a minimum of 74 miles per hour.

Energy producers in the Gulf of Mexico were shutting down production and the U.S. Republican Party said it would recess its national convention in Tampa, Florida for a day out of safety concerns as the storm bore down on the state.

The storm could force a short-term shut-down of 43 percent of U.S. offshore oil capacity and 38 percent of its natural gas output, according to forecasters at Weather Insight, an arm of Thomson Reuters.

Republicans, who will formally nominate former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney as their presidential candidate for the November election, will convene their four-day meeting on Monday as scheduled, then recess until Tuesday.

Tampa, located on Florida's west coast, faces a threat of from both winds and heavy rains from Isaac, according to NHC meteorologist David Zelinsky.

"For the Tampa area, storm surge values could be three to five feet above ground," Zelinsky said, referring to the threat of storm-driven inundations of the city from Tampa Bay.

In its latest advisory, the NHC said Isaac was churning west-northwest at 20 miles per hour. The storm was officially expected to make landfall anywhere between the Florida Panhandle and eastern Louisiana early on Wednesday as a Category 2 hurricane.

CRASHING WAVES, FLOODING

In Cuba, Baracoa, the island's easternmost city, appeared to get the worst of the storm, which sent 13-foot (4-metre) waves crashing over the seawall and into the streets. Cuban TV reports said more than a thousand people had to be evacuated and 50 buildings were damaged.

"The force of the waves has destroyed the farmer's market for small businesses, also the children's area of a park and various homes," said Baracoa resident Olider Aguilera by telephone. "But I can tell you that the people are not afraid. They're accustomed to meteorological phenomena stronger than this," he told Reuters.

In Haiti, Isaac added to the misery of more than 350,000 survivors of the 2010 earthquake still living in flimsy resettlement camps as water gushed into tents and corrugated plastic shacks ripped apart by the wind.

Authorities said six people were known dead, including a 10-year-old girl killed when a wall fell on her and a woman crushed to death by a falling tree.

Many main roads were blocked or impassable and 14,000 people had been evacuated to shelters, authorities said.

In the Dominican Republic, officials said three people were missing, including the mayor of a town near Santo Domingo swept away as he tried to save another person from a flooded river.

Officials said 764 homes had been damaged by the storm and more than 9,600 people evacuated from storm-struck areas.

Eat Negative Calorie Foods and Lose Weigh

Yes! Negative calorie foods provide less energy than they require in the process of digestion.

We all know drinking plenty of water helps to lose weight, because one liter of water (0 calories) burns about 50 calories in the process of digestion. The good news is some foods have the same effect. The process of chewing and digesting them uses more calories than they contain ? there?s nothing left to store and even some of the stored fat gets used. Don?t get your hopes too high, though ? negative calorie foods are healthy foods, mostly fruits and vegetables, not desserts.

Water or negative calorie foods?
Water is the source of life, no question about that. Our bodies don?t function without it, but simply drinking water and calling that a diet doesn?t work. Why not? Because water doesn?t have any nutritional value. Regular water contains no fiber and no vitamins and minerals our bodies need, so a pure water diet simply ends in vitamin and mineral deficiency.

Low calorie foods, on the other hand, can be very nutritious. They give your body what it needs, make you feel full, but use plenty of calories in digestion ? thus forcing your body to use its reserves.

Nevertheless, you should be cautious ? Even vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre aren?t enough. Negative calorie diet must be combined with proteins and other nutrients from the major food groups.

Fact or fiction?
?Negative calories? is a catchy phrase, often used by big food companies. They advertise negative calorie foods and drinks, but in fact have no evidence to support their claim as there was no research done. And sometimes ?negative calories? means their foods and (especially) drinks contain additives which boost metabolism ? like caffeine, L-Carnitine and so on. In 2007, even Coca-Cola and Nestle had to pay a fine for advertising their tea as a ?negative calories? drink!

Negative calorie foods list?
Here?s a list of foods you should have for snack or make for dinner to lose weight ? but you have to eat it raw or slightly cooked ? with nothing on them!

Vegetables:
  • Asparagus
  • Beet
  • Broccoli
  • Cabbage
  • Carrot
  • Cauliflower
  • Celery
  • Chicory
  • Hot Chilly
  • Cucumber
  • Garden cress
  • Garlic
  • Green beans
  • Endive
  • Lettuce
  • Onion
  • Radish
  • Spinach
  • Turnip
  • Zucchini
Fruits:
  • Apple
  • Blueberries
  • Cantaloupe
  • Cranberry
  • Grapefruit
  • Honeydew
  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Mango
  • Orange
  • Papaya
  • Peach
  • Pineapple
  • Raspberry
  • Strawberry
  • Tomato
  • Tangerine
  • Watermelon
  • .
  • .

Make it work!
Knowing you can burn 50 calories with a liter of water or 25 calories with some broccoli sounds great, but reality is, it won?t help you lose weight, unless you make an effort. Our bodies burn 60 calories per hour while sleeping, so eating negative calorie foods won?t make a difference, unless you combine such diet with plenty of exercise.

Make it a rule: drink plenty of water, eat negative calorie foods and work out!

Quotes reacting to the death of Neil Armstrong

Quotes about Neil Armstrong, the American who was the first human to walk on the moon, who died Saturday at age 82:

? "For those who may ask what they can do to honor Neil, we have a simple request. Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink." ? Armstrong's family, announcing his death in a written statement.

? "Neil was among the greatest of American heroes ? not just of his time, but of all time. When he and his fellow crew members lifted off aboard Apollo 11 in 1969, they carried with them the aspirations of an entire nation. They set out to show the world that the American spirit can see beyond what seems unimaginable ? that with enough drive and ingenuity, anything is possible. And when Neil stepped foot on the surface of the moon for the first time, he delivered a moment of human achievement that will never be forgotten." ? President Barack Obama

? "Neil Armstrong was a very personal inspiration to all of us within the astronaut office. His historic step onto the Moon's surface was the foundation for many of our personal dreams to become astronauts. The only thing that outshone his accomplishments was his humility about those accomplishments. We will miss him as a friend, mentor, explorer and ambassador for the American spirit of ingenuity." ? Bob Behnken, chief of the NASA Astronaut Office.

? "As long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be included in them, remembered for taking humankind's first small step on a world beyond our own. Besides being one of America's greatest explorers, Neil carried himself with a grace and humility that was an example to us all. When President Kennedy challenged the nation to send a human to the moon, Neil Armstrong accepted without reservation. As we enter this next era of space exploration, we do so standing on the shoulders of Neil Armstrong." ? Charles Bolden, NASA administrator.

? "He was the best, and I will miss him terribly." ? Michael Collins, who flew to the moon with Armstrong and served as the command module pilot.

? "When I think of Neil, I think of someone who for our country was dedicated enough to dare greatly." ? John Glenn, the first American to orbit Earth and Armstrong's close friend.

? "On behalf of the Aldrin family we extend our deepest condolences to Carol & the entire Armstrong family on Neil's passing. He will be missed." ? Buzz Aldrin, second man on the moon, via Twitter.

? "Gabby and I are both sad to hear of the loss of Neil Armstrong. He was an icon of exploration and a great American. He will be missed." ? retired astronaut Mark Kelly with wife, former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords, via Twitter.

? "He did it the right way. He was humble. He was strong. He was an American hero." ? astronaut Clayton Anderson, a space shuttle and space station veteran.

? "RIP Neil Armstrong. Thank you for everything, for your sacrifices, achievements, and inspiration. We will try to carry on your legacy." ? Bobak Ferdowsi, flight director on the current Mars Curiosity mission, famously photographed with a mohawk haircut.

? "Neil Armstrong understood that we should reach beyond the stars. His 'one giant leap for mankind' was taken by a giant of a man." ? U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., who flew on space shuttle Columbia in 1986, just one month before the Challenger accident.

? "Neil was a humble man who devoted his life and his career to serving a greater cause. From the children who strive to explore the stars to those who devote their lives to reaching beyond the bonds of earth, one can only hope to follow in his footsteps." ? Lou Rains, chairman of the Coalition for Space Exploration.

How do I end the twin soul separation and struggle phase?

Even though you have met your twin soul, there are no guarantees that everything will work smoothly from that day on. (Luckily, there?s also no guarantees that it won?t!) The separation phase is often explained by karmic debt, but we have a different idea on that. This post applies to both twin souls who have already met and those who haven?t met yet.

The old school new age teaches that to make it possible for twin soul couples to be together, they have to be free of all karma. That is a troublesome concept for two reasons. One has to do with non-automatic reincarnation which makes karma unnecessary, secondly, and more importantly, if you look at twin soul couples who are happily together? Do we trust all of them have ?made good? all their bad deeds? I can?t even begin to imagine the amount of bad karma the normal smugness of having found your twin soul the thinking pattern ?this is the reward for my good deeds and high soul age level? would rake up. Your twin soul isn?t a reward for good behaviour or ?enlightenment?, you better get away from that thinking because it?s simply not healthy. If you understand karma in the context that you don?t exactly have to do anything to clear it, but just ?live it through? this makes you sit and wait for some indefinite time frame until you feel it?s right? Or not.

What happens has everything to do with psychology and the law of attraction. If you understand the basis of the law of the attraction, in short, in this context, it can be summed up as ?you get what you believe you deserve?. If deep down you think that you don?t deserve to be loved, the settling karma -thinking would allow you to get around it by ?I have now suffered enough to deserve happiness in the end.? Your time would be better spent on self-improvement, self-empowerment, and clearing your mind from defeating attitudes and negativity. You don?t need to do this in the context of twin souls, but any normal psychologist will be able to help you here. If you are not that way inclined, any life coaching resource might help you, self-help books and simple self-reflection as to what are the reasons that you feel your twin soul doesn?t, can?t or won?t love you, or why you can?t find him in the first place. (It sounds like a different thing if you have met your twin or not but both situations are related. If you haven?t met your twin soul yet, it?s simply because you believe things like this don?t happen to people like you.)

?Get ready for love? does sound a lot simpler than ?align myself with my twin soul? doesn?t it? When you think about it this way, you may have a bit of a chuckle. We do like to mystify things, don?t we? :p The truth is that the twin soul relationship is mysterious and complicated enough as it is, we don?t need to complicate it further. I believe the mystification comes from the need to explain to others that ?my love is bigger than your love?, and although all of us know the difference when it?s your true twin, we also know that people who haven?t experienced this have absolutely no clue. Sorry I am rambling.

What we must do for ourselves before our twin soul relationship can work we need to get rid of any insecurities, doubt and bitterness we might harbour. These things don?t obstruct normal relationships because we are not as afraid of screwing it up and being told that we are no longer loved. There?s nothing more mysterious to it than that. The twin soul connection will freak out even the most confident of us, and put us face to face with our own failures. We must work on our self-esteem, to learn exactly what is keeping us from either giving love or accepting love. Please note that if one of you is perfectly fine with who they are, the other one will have SO MUCH EASIER TIME accepting your relationship even if they hadn?t worked on their issues yet. This happens, because a person who is happy within themselves will never have to retort. They can take rejection, blow ups, fuck ups and all the fury of Hell from their twin flame and not blink, and unless the twin soul is absolutely torn to pieces by their personal experiences, this is usually enough to keep them together and the hurting twin will be able to heal themselves with the help of the whole one.

To fast track your own healing, it would be a great idea to seek counselling from a relationship life coach or a psychologist. These are very practical solutions to what seems to be a mysterious problem but really isn?t. Remember that all-consuming love is not the privilege of only those who hold new age beliefs. There is also nothing telling that you shouldn?t seek couple?s therapy if you are struggling to hold onto each other.

For the cheap, ;) the DYI folk and those who like things mysterious, you need to be very courageous in looking into your own psyche and finding out your own issues for yourself. I would highly recommend you contacting your soul and ask help in clearing out your internal drama. If you ask this, remember that the answers you hear will be what you NEED to hear, not what you want to hear, and even if it didn?t make sense, keep going and TRY to make sense out of it. I would suggest the pendulum for this as a tool.
